The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Climate: Summer is dry and hot but light breezes create a comfortable atmosphere. Perpignan boasts the highest average daytime summer temperatures in France (28'C).
History: The region has a dramatic history. There are Roman remains and Cathar castles (like the one at Queribus) which cling to the rocky foothills of the Pyrenees. The medieval town of Carcassone was the strategic defensive sanctuary for the Cathars during the 13th century seiges, an event referred to in the recent best selling novel, The Labyrinth.
Nearby places of Interest: There are numerous fortified towns which are steeped in history and where Catalan culture is very evident. Sites of special interest include the fortress town of Villefranche de Conflent, Vernet-les-Bains with its spas and thermal baths, the abbeys of St Michel-de-Cuxa and St Martin-du-Canigou and the artistic village of Eus.
Don't miss the "Little Yellow Train" will take you on a spectacular journey up the steep inclines to the high Pyrenees plateau and the mountains beyond. This unique trip, from Villfranche de Conflent to Mont Louis (a stronghold built by Vauban) and the onwards to the mountain resort of Font Romeu, offers magnificent views.
The Prades / Finestret area
Finestret is a small medieval village with around 130 inhabitants. It is set in the foothills of the Pyrenees and there is a river running through the village with deep clean pools where you can bathe in summer. The little town of Vinca is only 5 km away and has a number of bars and restaurants as well as a small supermarket. There is also a lake (with a beach) where one can swim and windsurf. Finestret is 40 mins drive from Collioure and other Mediterranean coastal resorts. It is also only 45 mins drive from the Pyrenees ski resorts of Font Romeu and Les Angles.
The vibrant town of Prades is only 8 kms away and offers a variety of facilities: banks, supermarkets, excellent restaurants, cafes, cinema and a hospital. There is a colourful street market every Tuesday. Prades also hosts the Pablo Casals Music Festival every August.
Local activities include historical sightseeing, hill-walking, climbing, golf, tennis, swimming, wind-surfing, sailing and fishing. Both alpine and cross-country skiing are available in the winter.
