The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Languedoc-Roussillon is perfectly positioned between the Mediterranean to the east where the beautiful sandy beaches provide long days by the sea, and the Pyrenees to the west, which offer a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities, not to mention skiing in the winter!

This region is a delight; the Conflent valley provides lush green scenery, with Mount Canigou dominating the skyline and the Pyrenees visible in the distance. You can be swimming in the sea in the morning, and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon. There are even thermal hot springs, so if you would like to combine the two activities we can suggest a hike AND a swim in the mountains! It really does offer you everything!

There is a lake in the local town of Vinca, with beaches, from which you can swim, sail or wind-surf, or you could just visit the popular open air swimming pool in Prades or nearby Ille sur Têt..

Weather: We benefit from being in the sunniest region of France, and enjoy warm, sunny weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months (45 minute drive to the ski resorts).

Prades / Marquixanes area

Marquixanes is a fabulous village, quiet and tranquil but also with great amenities, such as a Post Office, Shops, and even bars and a restaurant (they also do take-aways!), people come from miles around to get their patisseries from the village boulangerie. For the young at heart there is an adventure park at the river, where you can indulge in canyoning, kayaking, rope adventure, with zip wires, cargo nets up in the tree tops and all sorts of other adventurous activities.

The nearest main town, just a few kilometres away, is Prades. A thriving market town, Prades has many great shops and restaurants as well as a lively market on both Tuesday and Saturday mornings, where you can buy local produce such as the peaches and cherries that are grown in abundance here, fresh vegetables, wonderful cheeses…. and of course the excellent wine!

There are events and festivals throughout the year. the world famous Spanish cellist Pablo Casals fled to Prades during the Spanish civil war, stayed and established the festival that now bears his name. The Catalan summer school takes over the town for two weeks in August, and there is dancing in the square every night during this period.

Places of Interest: For touring the area, Marquixanes offers an excellent base. Just a few of the sites of interest within easy driving distance are listed below:

* Villefranche de Conflent, a fine example of a medieval walled town
* Little Yellow Train, catch this train from Villefranche and enjoy the specatular mountain views right into the Pyrenees.
* Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent renowned caves with an incredible light and sound show
* St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched impressively high on the hillside with fantastic scenery and walks.
* St Michel de Cuxa, 6th century abbey that hosts concerts during the Pablo Casals festival but is also open for viewing most of the year.
* St Thomas les Bains, outstanding natural thermal hot springs in wonderful outdoor mountain setting.

Further details indoors:
Accommodation in the house is arranged over three floors with the ground floor containing a hallway leading to the large master bedroom (Double) with en-suite shower room and separate WC, and also the stairs up to the 1st floor.
The 1st floor has two further bedrooms (one twin and one double) sharing a family bathroom with WC, stairs leading to the second floor. Worth noting is the fact that all bedrooms have plenty of storage space which is unusual in many village properties this makes it ideal for those wishing to stay for a longer period.

On the top floor, the space is devoted to an open plan living area which incorporates kitchen and dining room along with a sitting area leading onto the terrace. This is a wonderful, bright, airy space and having the terrace it allows you to immerse yourself in the mountains themselves.

A small utility room leads off the kitchen area, where the washing machine and dishwasher are conveniently housed. We also provide a travel cot for babies up to 2 years old (no linen).

Marquixanes is a fabulous village, quiet and tranquil but also with great amenities, such as a Post Office, Shops, Tabac and even bars and a restaurant (they also do take-aways!), people come from miles around to get their patisseries from the village boulangerie. For the young at heart..there is an adventure park at the river where you can climb on ropes up in the trees over the river, with zip wires and cargo nets, you can also indulge in canyoning, kayaking and all sorts of other adventurous activities.

This house has been very tastefully decorated and furnished. The terrace on the top floor gives incredible views over the area, and even has a fantastic view of the the "Pic du Canigou" - the most famous landmark of the area - the peak of the sacred mountain of the Catalans. Unusually for a village house, there is plenty of storage - each bedroom has fitted wardrobes. There is en suite shower room with separate w.c. in the largest of the three bedroom, a family shower-room with WC serves the other two bedrooms.

Further details outdoors:
The view from the terrace is amazing across the mountains and surrounding hills......you have to see it to believe it!

The place is very charming with a whole variety of activities from wineries to white water rafting. The beach at le Racou is fantastic and so are the restaurants in the close town of Prades. The accommodation is well equipped and very clean and the view of the mountain is spectacular. Oliver Brown - London.
