On the top floor, the space is devoted to an open plan living area which incorporates kitchen and dining room along with a sitting area leading onto the terrace. This is a wonderful, bright, airy space and having the terrace it allows you to immerse yourself in the mountains themselves.

Marquixanes is a fabulous village, quiet and tranquil but also with great amenities, such as a Post Office, corner shop/tabac/café and a tapas bar, people come from miles around to get their patisseries from the village boulangerie/café. There is also a local wine shop with free tasting. For the young at heart..there is an adventure park at the river where you can climb on ropes up in the trees over the river, with zip wires and cargo nets, you can also indulge in canyoning, kayaking and all sorts of other adventurous activities.
This house has been very tastefully decorated and furnished. The terrace on the top floor gives incredible views over the area, and even has a fantastic view of the the "Pic du Canigou" - the most famous landmark of the area - the peak of the sacred mountain of the Catalans. Unusually for a village house, there is plenty of storage - each bedroom has fitted wardrobes. There is en suite shower room with separate w.c. in the largest of the three bedroom, a family shower-room with WC serves the other two bedrooms.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Languedoc-Roussillon is perfectly positioned between the Mediterranean to the east where the beautiful sandy beaches provide long days by the sea, and the Pyrenees to the west, which offer a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities, not to mention skiing in the winter!
This region is a delight; the Conflent valley provides lush green scenery, with Mount Canigou dominating the skyline and the Pyrenees visible in the distance. You can be swimming in the sea in the morning, and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon. There are even thermal hot springs, so if you would like to combine the two activities we can suggest a hike AND a swim in the mountains! It really does offer you everything!
There is a lake in the local town of Vinca, with beaches, from which you can swim, sail or wind-surf, or you could just visit the popular open air swimming pool in Prades or nearby Ille sur Têt..
Weather: We benefit from being in the sunniest region of France, and enjoy warm, sunny weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months (45 minute drive to the ski resorts).
The Prades / Marquixanes area
Marquixanes is a fabulous village, quiet and tranquil but also with great amenities. For the young at heart there is an adventure park at the river, where you can indulge in canyoning, kayaking, rope adventure, with zip wires, cargo nets up in the tree tops and all sorts of other adventurous activities in the summer there is also a Tapas Bar.
The nearest main town, just a few kilometres away, is Prades. A thriving market town, Prades has many great shops and restaurants as well as a lively market on both Tuesday and Saturday mornings, where you can buy local produce such as the peaches and cherries that are grown in abundance here, fresh vegetables, wonderful cheeses…. and of course the excellent wine!
There are events and festivals throughout the year. the world famous Spanish cellist Pablo Casals fled to Prades during the Spanish civil war, stayed and established the festival that now bears his name. The Catalan summer school takes over the town for two weeks in August, and there is dancing in the square every night during this period.
Places of Interest: For touring the area, Marquixanes offers an excellent base. Just a few of the sites of interest within easy driving distance are listed below:
* Villefranche de Conflent, a fine example of a medieval walled town
* Little Yellow Train, catch this train from Villefranche and enjoy the specatular mountain views right into the Pyrenees.
* Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent renowned caves with an incredible light and sound show
* St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched impressively high on the hillside with fantastic scenery and walks.
* St Michel de Cuxa, 6th century abbey that hosts concerts during the Pablo Casals festival but is also open for viewing most of the year.
* St Thomas les Bains, outstanding natural thermal hot springs in wonderful outdoor mountain setting.

We had a brilliant week in this property in October 2011. It is very well equipped, in fact the best self-catering accommodation we have ever experienced. The views from the balcony are fantastic and the location has a wonderful homely french feel about it and the weather was just the icing on the cake. |

We have just returned from Marquixanes where we spent 9 nights. The cottage is in the centre of the village and is extremely clean, well furnished and decorated, with all the facilities we wanted. It is a great base for the surrounding area which is beautiful. The booking process and afterwards, the return of the deposit, was speedy and faultless. We really enjoyed our stay and would be very happy to return |

The place is very charming with a whole variety of activities from wineries to white water rafting. The beach at le Racou is fantastic and so are the restaurants in the close town of Prades. The accommodation is well equipped and very clean and the view of the mountain is spectacular. Oliver Brown - London.

We loved the house and we loved our visit to Languedoc-Roussillon. You have really decorated the house beautifully to make it comfortable, attractive, and convenient. And the views from the terrace are stunning. The information and directions you provided for the house were impeccable. From Marquixanes we travelled to: Perpignan, Prades, Villefranche de Conflent, the Priory of Serabonne, Montsegur, and the castle at Arques and its town's museum. We also hiked in the hills adjacent to Marquixanes and near Cattlar. We both cooked at home and ate at brasseries and restaurants. We especially loved the fruit and vegetable market and boulangerie right in Marquixanes. My husband and son adored the rope climbing park in Marquixanes, which they visited for two afternoons. I found important new information for my renaissance research on Shakespeare's All's Well that Ends Well and its connection to this part of France. We so much want to come back! Sandra, Illinois.
