The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

Pyrenees Orientales contains both spectacular mountains and long sandy beaches. The mountain paths are plentiful and well marked for all levels of walkers and bikers whilst the beaches are interspersed with fishing villages and lagoons – a delight for water sport enthusiasts and sun bathers alike.
It is a frontier region where the Catalan flag flies proudly and where Mount Canigou, the symbol of all of Catalonia, towers over the plains, green with vines and fruit trees, and over the foothills of the Pyrenees with their ancient monasteries, fortified towns, timeless villages and prehistoric caves.
The area also offers a museum of modern art and many concerts including the famous Pablo Casals concerts of chamber music. in Prades.
Each village has its market and its festival. The sunshine record rivals that of the Cote d’Azur and the variety in the region is immense. Whatever your interest and inclination you are sure to find something to enjoy.
The Prades / Serdinya area
Serdinya is half way between the sandy Mediterranean beaches and the high snowy mountains, a traditional small village with narrow winding streets and the River Têt running through the middle.
It has a village square, the scene of the dancing during the fête in August. There is also a recreational area with boules court, a table tennis table, and a children’s playground. The church is 12th century and there is a bar/restaurant /shop selling a variety of basic items.
The village is the start of walks through the mountainside and ancient terraces where you can visit old chapels, see a stunning variety of wild flowers and butterflies and try and catch a glimpse of the izards, goats, deer and birds of prey that roam the mountains.
If you go to the station in Serdinya and put out your hand the little yellow train with its open coaches will stop and take you on a spectacular journey climbing more than 1000 metres through mountains gorges and plateaus to the Spanish border.
Within 5 mins drive, is the fortified town of Villefranche de Conflent where there are good restaurants and shops. Within 10mins drive, there is Vernet Les Bains with more restaurants, shops, a supermarket, an internet café, a lovely outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, horse riding and an animal park. With 15 mins driving you come to Prades the local market town which has a large and sociable weekly market, supermarkets and local stores. Within 45 minutes due West you can be in the high mountains (Font Romeu, Les Angles) where you can ski in winter and walk in summer admiring the stunning views up the Spanish and Andorran border, the alpine flowers, the grazing cattle and horses and the lakes where there is fishing.
There is a mountain bike park in Les Angles which includes a terrifying run called Mordor,. Other actibvities in the mountains include go-karting, mountaineering, canyoning and potholing. Finally with 50 minutes drive due East, you can be at the coast with its sandy beaches, lagoons and water sports. On the way you will pass golf courses. Down near the coast there is mediaeval history to be found in the nearby Cathar castles and there is modern history to be found in the second world war internment camp on the plain.
The area boosts tourist offices in a larger villages and in Prades – these are a mine of information and will keep you informed about activities, festivals and even the local weather forecast.

We loved this house. It felt rustic but very comfortable, and the patio and plunge pool with such a lovely view across the valley were just perfect during a very hot August week.We intended to spend more time on the coast but in August it was just too busy and hot down there and we preferred spending time lazing around reading and swimming at the house, with the occasional visit to Prades, Vernet and Ceret. Given more time we would have explored more up the road to Spain and visited the couple of shops at the next village north rather than the supermarkets south, but we only had a week . . . Recommended for anyone who prefers characterful houses and a chance to experience an unspoiled French hamlet. |
Guestbook for 34 Rue du Sola
We're now home well back in Denmark a most wonderful holiday in Serdinya. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in your beautiful house, and we all agree that the house in reality superseded the virtual images on the website by far, so thanks for letting us "borrow" it. We will surely recommend it to friends and family. Family from Denmark
We had a wonderful week, you are very lucky to own such a beautiful place. The location was stunning. We would love to return.
.The advice about catching the yellow train from Serdinya was excellent. What a fantastic day out! Monsieur le Controller was very careful to make sure we got off at the correct stop. Family from Cornwall
Just a quick note to say what a wonderful time we had in your house in Serdinya. The location was just perfect for us, and the house, gardens and pool offered everything we required for a relaxing and pleasant stay. We have never been to that part of France before but thought it was truly stunning. We would have no hesitation in coming back, partly because we barely scratched the surface of what the area has to offer but also because the house was just fantastic. Family from W. Midlands
We really enjoyed our stay at your lovely property and the way it made us feel like locals. Family from London
