The terrace from the living room looks onto the village square, and boasts a perfect view of the Canigou mountain beyond.

Further details

Changeover days are Saturdays but this is flexible outside the high season of July and August.

Linen & cleaning:

Linen and bathroom towels are provided and laundered at no extra cost.

The house is cleaned after each let, but we do ask guests to leave the property as they found it.

Children & elderly guests:

As there is a balcony on the third floor, we believe the house is unsuitable for young children. One of the staircases is quite steep, and, as the house is arranged over 4 floors, would be unsuitable for people who have difficulty climbing stairs. Children must be supervised at all times in the walled garden/pool area.

Smoking:

Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the house.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

There is something for everyone in this area of France. The climate is the warmest in the country, with over 300 days of sunshine a year, mild winters and glorious summers. Water from the mountains irrigates the valley, so despite the low rainfall it never looks parched and dry.

The area is peppered with Cathar castles, vineyards, historic towns and spas. Whether you're looking for sports activities, relaxation, pampering or history, the area around Codalet is full of ideas to inspire your holiday. The region is well served by public transport, where every bus and train journey costs just 1EUR. Take the 'Petit Train Jaune' up into the mountains for an unforgettable journey and bathe in the hot springs at St Thomas les Bains, or head for the coast and the long white beaches of the Mediterranean.

The historic city of Perpignan is just half an hour away; spend a day at the beach in Spain; visit Barcelona or Girona for an afternoon or hire a car and discover the art towns of Ceret and Figeras, the charming fishing town of Collioure or the Cathar castles of Queribus or Fontpeydrouse.

Prades

The charming village of Codalet is perfectly placed at the edge of the market town of Prades with the Canigou and surrounding countryside on its doorstep. Cycling trails start here up into the foothills of the mountains and ramblers will love the many signposted walks which criss-cross the region. A bread van delivers 6 days a week and a deli-van visits every Thursday. It's a quiet village with the huge benefit of (now) being a suburb of Prades, a short 10 minute walk away (1km).

Prades itself is a pretty, bustling town with plenty to occupy visitors. There is a great range of local shops, cafes and restaurants. The square hosts a farmer's market twice a week featuring local food and crafts, and festivals are celebrated here like they are in Spain: often!

Just one kilometre out of the village of Codalet you'll find the beautiful Abbaye de Saint Michel-de-Cuxa which hosts numerous musical recitals during the summer months as part of the Pablo Casals Festival. Every July the village of Codalet holds a festival which lasts 3 days, featuring music, food and plenty of Sardane dancing. It's hard to miss this as our house boasts the best view of the square!

"Ended up in a hotel."

Very damaged interior. Lots of keeping needed. Uncomfortable reach to the lounge placed at the top of the house. Bathroom at ground floor and bedrooms in first and second floors. Swimming pool in bad … More

Thank you for your review. The issue of the layout of the house was never raised when you let us know you were going to stay at a local 5* hotel. It was our understanding you were looking for somewhere which offered garage facilities, which we clearly state we don't. However I'm glad your husband enjoyed his stay in our home, and that he and the guests either side of your booking happily didn't share your experience. This 18th century historic house is described in detail on this and our own website but we would encourage anyone considering a stay at Les Volets Vermeils to get in contact to discuss any specific car parking or room arrangement needs.

"Beautiful and confortable old house with fascinating history"

Les Volets Vermeilles is a delightfully renovated old town house, tall and narrow on four floors, so has lots of staircases and pretty views from all windows. It is a gem and is a lovely combination of ancient and modern with a pretty courtyard garden and sun trap deck and pool. The area is wonderful for walkers and to enjoy the locality fully, a car is probably a food idea.

"A delightful gite, very well equipped, and thoughtfully renovated to retain its charming character ."

We had an excellent holiday in Les Volets Vermeils, the owner is very helpful and offers good advice about travel arrangements and outings. The pre-booked food parcel which awaited us was invaluable, as was the pick-up and drop-off from Perpignan (at considerably less cost than using a local taxi).

The property is situated in a small village, and it's a 10 minute walk to the local town which has excellent services: bus and train station, wide range of shops, amazing market (Tuesday and Saturday) and cafe's. The views are great - to Mount Canigou in the distance, or closer, over the village square, and from the back of the property over rooftops to rolling countryside. We arrived in the dark, so opening the shutters the next morning to such views was a real treat.

The house itself is a charming mix of contemporary and traditional style - original fixtures and fitting have been retained which adds greatly to the homely and relaxed atmosphere. The kitchen is very well equipped, the bathroom has a first class shower, the bedrooms have plenty of storage and crisp bedlinen, the lounge also has a covered balcony which looks out over the village and to the mountains in the distance. The wi-fi was great to let our 3 children (aged 17, 14 and 12) stay connected to their various social lives, and for us to cache maps which we could then use when we were out and about.

Outside, the garden is completely enclosed and private (no worries about anyone overlooking a rather self-conscious forty-something wearing a bikini for the first time in nearly 30 years!), the pool was a huge success with the children, and it was also very pleasant to sit outside at the table and chairs in the shade. One of our first meals was local new potatoes, boiled then tossed in olive oil and sprinkled with rosemary from the garden - utterly delicious!

We stayed for a week, but could easily have stayed longer, as there is plenty to do in the near vicinity. and there is a folder of information leaflets as well as an 'activities journal' left by previous occupants. We made good use of the 1 euro buses and trains to reach other localities.

We will be recommending this property to our friends, it's just brilliant.

"Lovely House in a Gorgeous Setting"

We a a mature married couple that stayed for 2 weeks in July at Les Volets, and had a wonderful time! So much to do and explore in this region, there was still lots we were unable to do in 2 weeks!

Amazing views from both sides of the house, and a lovely garden, but so many places to explore - absolutely brilliant if you have a car, though not essential for many places.

Whether you like beautiful walks, climbing mountains, going to the beach, or after a bit of history (eg: cathar castles recommended), its all here.

Prades itself has a beautiful market square and a nice little buzz about it. We were lucky enough to visit on Bastille Day, when it really came to life!!! Amazing for a town with just 7,000 people! Codalet itself and the setting of the house it really something special, but very sleepy and historic - if thats what you like then this is the place! Lots of easy little walks into Prades - 15 mins max.

So many of the "most beautiful villages in France" around here such as Eus and Villefranche (like a mini Carcassonne) all worth a visit. You can climb Mount Canigou if you like (9,000ft), or visit the Cathar castles (Queribus I partic liked).

If you have a car, then a day trip to Collioure on the coast near spanish border is a must - gorgeous! (1 hours drive) - what a perfect day trip.

We would definately come back.

"A superb break - recommended!"

We really enjoyed our two week stay at Les Volets. We booked for 2 weeks in January and found the whole booking process very efficient. We arrived and found the place no problem at all and we loved it! It was very authentically french, and everything was clean and well presented and was every thing we needed and expected. As we stayed out of season we did not use the outdoor space, but the pool and outdoor courtyard was really impressive and would be a big bonus in the summer.

The area was excellent for walking and we also visited various beaches too which were only 45 mins away aswell. There is a book that people have left comments and tips in of places to go and what to see and we did plan a lot of our days according to others suggestions, and this was something we really liked.

All in all we had an amazing break and when you get there and start opening all the shutters you simply will not believe the views, every single one is amazing. Wait till you get into the lounge and look out over the courtyard and towards the mountains.

Thanks Olivia and family for a super break.
