The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Climate: Summer is dry and hot but light breezes create a comfortable atmosphere. Perpignan boasts the highest average daytime summer temperatures in France (28'C). This region is also the sunniest in France with over 300 days of sunshine each year.
History: The region has a dramatic history. There are Roman remains and Cathar castles (like the one at Queribus) which cling to the rocky foothills of the Pyrenees. The medieval town of Carcassone was the strategic defensive sanctuary for the Cathars during the 13th century sieges, an event referred to in the recent best selling novel, The Labyrinth.
Nearby places of Interest: There are numerous fortified towns which are steeped in history and where Catalan culture is very evident. Sites of special interest include the fortress town of Villefranche de Conflent, Vernet-les-Bains with its spas and thermal baths, the abbeys of St Michel-de-Cuxa and St Martin-du-Canigou and the artistic village of Eus.
Don't miss the "Little Yellow Train" which will take you on a spectacular journey up the steep inclines to the high Pyrenees plateau and the mountains beyond. This unique trip, from Villfranche de Conflent to Mont Louis (a stronghold built by Vauban) and the onwards to the mountain resort of Font Romeu, offers magnificent views.
Finestret is a small medieval village with around 150 inhabitants. It is set in the foothills of the Pyrenees and there is a river running through the village with deep clean pools where you can bathe in summer. Finestret is also located close to one of the best places for Canyoning in Europe (near to the village of Espira). The little town of Vinca is only 5 km away and has a number of bars and restaurants as well as a small supermarket. There is also a lake (with a beach) where one can swim and windsurf. Finestret is 40 mins drive from Collioure and other Mediterranean coastal resorts. Colliure and Port Vendres are famous for their aristic connections (Matisse, Rennie-Mckintosh and others). Finestret is also only 45 mins drive from the Pyrenees ski resorts of Font Romeu and Les Angles. En route to the mountains, ome can stop at the open air themal baths at St Thomas. Ther is also a themal spa hotel at Molitch les Bains.
The vibrant town of Prades is only 8 kms away and offers a variety of facilities: banks, supermarkets, excellent restaurants, cafes, cinema and a hospital. There is a colourful street market every Tuesday. Prades also hosts the Pablo Casals Music Festival every August.
Local activities include historical sightseeing, hill-walking, climbing, golf, tennis, swimming, canyoning, wind-surfing, sailing and fishing. Both alpine and cross-country skiing are available in the winter.

"If only for three days this is the perfect place to relax and recuperate!"
Quite simply a little gem for a couple or a small family. Plenty of space in the house with a substantial balcony for sitting and reading, eating and drinking- all with the beautiful view over the mountains. The quiet village of Finestret is a pleasure to explore. Within an easy drive is all manner of French village and country life to experience- almost as if time has stopped still. The market on Tuesdays at Prades is worthwhile to stock up on fruit and veg and gifts to take home as is a mountain drive to the spa & thermal bath at Vernet-Les-BainsBains

"A lovely relaxing place to stay."
A lovely relaxing place to spend a fortnight. The house is charming and very authentically French, with all the amenities one could hope for and very clean. There are lots of things to do in the area throughout the year, particularly for the outdoor enthusiast, with the mountains close by for hiking, skiing and white water rafting. The coast is within easy reach for trips to the beach, although the lake in Vinca has a great beach and safe swimming for something close to home.

"The property is well equipped and in an excellent location."
Booking the property was easy and we had a lovely welcome on our arrival. Thereafter our two week stay was a delight. Finestret is very peaceful and perfectly situated to sample almost everything the region has to offer. The property is comfortable and well equipped. The needs of our four children (aged 9-15) were easily met and the local swimming lake was within easy reach to burn of any excess energy at the end of the day! I would recommend the property and region - you wont be disappointed.
