The Old Post Office
About the home
Once the village shop and post office, and now offering very stylish accommodation with a light and fresh seaside theme, The Old Post Office directly overlooks and is a few steps from a delightful sandy beach. Located in the lovely coastal village of Powfoot, with its charming mix of late Victorian red brick houses and fisherman's cottages, however you prefer to relax, there is something here for you!
There is a fantastic privately-hired spa in the village with outdoor hot tub, steam sauna and pool with a current - various pampering packages are available. There is a local shop (a mile up the road subject to their opening times) along with an excellent pub/restaurant providing good food (this is located in the golf hotel in the village.) The village also benefits from a challenging 18 hole links golf course. Walking, cycling (Sustrans Cycleway and the world class 7 Stanes mountainbiking trails are nearby,) fishing and bird watching are also popular pursuits (the area benefits from overwintering birds such as the Barnacle Geese who fly thousands of miles every year to spend their winter on the Solway Firth.) The cottage is also very popular with honeymooners due to its central location to various local wedding venues including Gretna, Comlongon Castle and Caerlaverock Castle (4 poster bed provided.)
Powfoot is on the Galloway Tourist route, an amazing coastal drive which takes you to castles and abbeys of amazing beauty and interest. Easy day trips to other popular towns and villages in Dumfries and Galloway and also very accessible to the Northern Lake District and the famous Hadrian's Wall.

The Dumfries and Galloway region

Dumfries and Galloway, often referred to as 'Scotland's best-kept secret' or the 'Scottish Riviera' is wonderfully unspoilt and full of surprises. With a coastline that is warmed by the Gulf Stream, making it a great destination year round, it is a region of stunning scenery, many rugged sandy coves and secret beaches, rolling hills, historical sites and Castles, forest parks and trails, picturesque villages and fishing ports, and impressive gardens with spectacular species. It offers a plentiful choice of outdoor activities both on water and land, including some fine golf courses to boot. Wildlife, some rare, are also in abundance here, being indigenous to the area.
Smoked produce is a speciality of these parts. Naturally, in an area where fresh local produce is of paramount importance, you will find no end of good good outlets ranging from snack bars to haute cuisine restaurants. Parallel's have been drawn to Cornwall but without the traffic and queues!
The Powfoot area
Powfoot is a great base to enjoy the whole of the region, however it also has it's own closer to home attractions. The large sandy beach is a few steps from the cottage. There is a challenging 18-hole links golf course 5 minutes from the property, along with a privately-hired spa. The spa has a pool with current, a massaging hot tub and traditional steam sauna. Various pampering packages can also be booked (we have a special package arranged exclusively for our guests which offers fantastic savings - please enquire for further details.)
Lovely walks or cycle rides can be taken from Powfoot itself (the Sustrans Cycleway passes by in nearby Annan and is good for cyclists both experienced and new. If mountainbiking is more your thing, the world class 7 stanes trails can be found nearby with Mabie being the nearest (Mabie Farm Park is a particular family favourite.) There is an outdoor activity centre in nearby Annan offering quad biking, go karting, paintballing, 4x4 driving etc.
Powfoot also has its own share of indigenous wildlife, most notably the rare and protected Natterjack toad and the Barnacle Geese who flock to the area for the winter. Nearby Annan has a good range of shops and restaurants, and it is only a 20 minute drive to Dumfries or a 30 minute drive to Carlisle.

its amazing to wake up and see the beach from the living room window its lovely to look out onto the ocean and see the never ending view. we went for a lovely walk on the beach front and through the gardens to the front of the property. we bumped into a few of the locals who were extremely warm and approachable. its such a quaint little place and everyone is so friendly and polite it is so refreshing. its hard to believe its only 2 hours from home. the difference in the local public is unbelieveable. you have the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere with the convenience of everything you need just a short drive away ... which is extremely hard to find. trust me this place is like no other. we will definitley be visiting again soon. The owners are really friendly aswel its nice being able to deal direct with them. it makes the stay more enjoyable because you know you are dealing with people who are trustworthy and approachable. i just want to take this oppurtunity to say a great big thankyou to the both of you for yet another enjoyable stay xx |

Guestbook for The Old Post Office
“Just wanted to send you a message to say THANK YOU! I have never stayed in such an amazing holiday cottage. It was beautiful. We felt so comfortable there, it was a shame we had not booked for two weeks! You should be proud of yourselves that you have such an amazing 'home' to rent out, decorated so tastefully, and so comfortable. Thank you once again. The setting was perfect, the view was perfect, our wedding day was amazing and the golf hotel just around the corner was a perfect reception venue. As for the Spa....what can we say, other than WOW! We would highly recommend the cottages (Both Bella Vista and the Old Post Office) to all of our friends and of course the Spa too! Thank you once again” (6-13th August 2011.)
