About this location

The Basilicata region

Basilicata is an interesting region although it's unknown by tourists standard. It offers history,culture,dramatic scenery, traditions, skiing, fine wine & food and heating people! This region is dotted of hill towns, castles, Greek & Roman ruins.

Potenza, the regional capital, is a modern mountain city and it has a beautiful old centre with several churches, Cathedral and Museums.

Don't miss Matera town (1 hour far) in Basilicata, the Unesco World Heritage Sites and set of Gibson's 'The Passion'.

SEE FOLLOWING some of numerous sites to visit in Basilicata region!

Moreover Basilicata (also named Lucania) has crystalline sea water with sandy beach like Metaponto and the sea cliffs and stony beaches of romantic Maratea.

POTENZA gets pleasure of central geographic position from which you can reach a lot of Basilicata's towns & villages and numerous historical city of art in nearby region.

In Campania visit Neaples, Pompei, Salerno, Amalfi coast (1,15 min away), the Caserta's Royal Palace (the italian Versailles, only 1,50 mins away).

In nearby Apulia visit Alberobello (the unique cone house in the world), Fasano and its Safari Zoo, the white city of Ostuni, Bari.

You can reach the previous places in 1 or 2 hours driving from Potenza.

Enjoy one day trip & returning then to the peacefulness of this place! Relax or activities nearby, for children as well!

You can reach the Ionian sea (Metaponto, Pisticci beach) in more than 1 hour driving along the Basentana motorway usually with no traffic and enjoying beautiful landscape.

GOLF: Riva dei Tessali near Metaponto on Jonian coats.

The golf course is within a farm of 80 acres. This course did not alter the original appearance of places: 18 holes that develop between citrus groves, vineyards and Mediterranean vegetation.

SKI: • LA SELLATA-PIERFAONE is the most important resort in the region only 24 km far from Potenza. These mountains can be reached on a direct road from Potenza rising the altitude of 1,255 metres. The skiing installations include two ski-lifts which are 1,500 metres long and which lead to the most difficult slopes. Higher up there is also a cross-country circuit. It's situated in a stunning location. Here from summer 2010 the Pierfaone Bike Park offers 3 different routes(8km) for bikers and more riding tours in the wonderful green of the Basilicata woods.

Basilicata offers other different resorts where skiing:

• On MOUNT VOLTURINO (1,836 m a.s.l) there are the very latest installations (two-seater chair-lift)

• Another ski centre is found 88 km from Potenza called “the Sacred MOUNT of VIGGIANO” at 1,400 m; there are skiing installations serving what are mainly easy slopes

• In Lagonegro, 112 km from Potenza, you can ski on SIRINO MOUNT in the natural beauty of breathtaking scenery

- Some details about origins & mores in POTENZA.

Potenza, a modern city in Southern Italy, was built on a hill more than 800 metres a.s.l.

It was inhabited till the IV century B.C probably after destruction of the close village of Serra di Vaglio, whose ruins are still visible. Under the Roman domination it was an important municipality as showed by S.Vito's Bridge and the Roman villa (nearby accommodation) .

The archaeological sites dating back to the native Lucanians to the Greek colonisation of southern Italy and the later Roman cities. METAPONTO, by the Ionion coast, is close to the ruins of the Greek city of Metapontum. More ruins can be visited at VENOSA and GRUMENTO.

- Places within walking distance: biking and walking on dedicated path (Parcomondo near house) or in rural zone around villa; tennis courts; shops, bars, supermarkets, restaurants, churches.


•PANTANO LAKE Area of Pignola (15' away) has WWF reserve area, a beautiful Air Base with flying school for flying ultra light planes, renting bike and roller blades, skating rinks,indoor&outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts and good restaurants

•RIFREDDO(20') boasts wonderful woods

•LAGOPESOLE CASTLE (25') was the hunting reserve of Frederick II. In summer is a set of music concerts & folk shows

•BRINDISI DI MONTAGNA and GRANCIA FOREST (25')- Park “La Grancia” in a wonderful natural scenery below an ancient castle a path, crosses the forest, leads to a wide amphitheatre where, in summertime every August, a show represents the story of the farmers' raising in Basilicata, known as 'Brigantaggio'. The spectacular special effects, are extremely thrilling

•The old town of CAMPOMAGGIORE (30') is the set of aerial show dance every August.

•PIETRAPERTOSA e CASTELMEZZANO(40 min) dramatically-situated villages high (Lucanian Dolomites).You can try FLYGHT OF THE ANGEL, UNIQUE in ITALY, by a mile-long metal cable suspended between two peaks across the valley (SEE YOU TUBE) usually from last weekend of April to mid September. NEW from 2013: you can 'FLYGHT' TOGETHER another person for maximum 150kg total weight!

•ACERENZA is one of the “I borghi più belli d'Italia” (i.e. The one among beautiful medieval villages in Italy) and has got a majestic cathedral. Here takes place an historical parade of medieval knights on 11th, 12th August

•MELFI: an ancient town with an imposing Frederick II's Castle containing an archaeological museum; on the occasion of Pentecost in May ( 18th, 19th May 2013) takes place “La festa dello Spirito Santo” (The feast of the Holy Spirit) and in October (26-27 Ott 2013) an International Conference of Falconry

•VENOSA, native land of Latin poet Horatius, with the suggestive Abbey of the SS. Trinità never finished and the Archaeological Park

•MONTICCHIO LAKES placed in the centre of ancient volcanoes' double crater of Vulture Mount

•MARATEA with steep slopes to the blue sea and a gargantuan statue of Christ and RIVELLO hill-town

The BASILICATA'S ARBOREAL CERIMONIES are from May to September. An archaic hymn to the fertility of the soil and life through the “matrimonio dell'albero” (marriage of a tree) between the top and the trunk of a tree.

2nd July – La Madonna della Bruna a MATERA (1 hour away), a great Madonna's Procession

We really love having guests and introducing them to our undiscovered region and a beautiful way to enjoy it is stay during some of our typical festival.
The Turks Parade takes place for celebrating the Potenza's Saint Patron day every 29th May by an historical procession but nearby (20-60 minutes far) you can partecipate in many events every season...just ask!
I will be very happy when you'll decide to come back your italian home away from home!

Thank you very much for your appreciating the house decoration that I personnally take care of it for a pleasant stay of my guests....the ambiance is very important to feel you very well!
Anyway often the real surprised is your discovering of Basilicata region, this is very easy and comfortable from Potenza city where the house is located. Actually very few people know this part of Italy but when they stay here they are always really happy to have chosen this region!
I was very glad to meet you and having could give you some tips for you travelling!
