The Central Southern England / Hampshire region
The Southern Coast of England is dotted with beautiful ports and harbours and nowhere is this more true than the south-central region centred on the county of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, is one of the world's most renown yachting centres. Across the Solent Channel is Portsmouth, with its rich maritime heritage. North of Portsmouth is Winchester at one time the capitol of England with its beautiful medieval cathedral and castle. To the South West lies the New Forest, planted by William the Conqueror. The National Motor Museum is located at Beaulieu in the grounds of a stately home carved from the remains of a medieval monastery. Close by is Broadlands, former home of Lord Mountbatten. West from Winchester lies another Cathedral city, Salisbury. The Cathedral stands in a green expanse of lawn in the centre of the city; the spire is the tallest in England and reaches to 404ft. North of Salisbury lies
Stonehenge the impressive stone circle begun nearly 5000 years ago. The broad open fields of Salisbury Plain are home to hundreds of other prehistoric mounds, tombs and circles.
Portsmouth / Southsea area
Portsmouth is a city rich in its maritime heritage. The city houses the Royal Naval Museum, which stands besides two historic ships in the city harbour. The HMS Victory was the flagship of Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, where the one-armed hero lost his life but won one of the most famous sea battles in history. In a special exhibit nearby, visitors can explore the remains of the Mary Rose, built by Henry VIII the Mary Rose sank on its maiden voyage, in full view of Henry and his court, but it has been rescued from its watery grave and preserved.
Only a few minutes walk from the Royal Naval Museum is Gunwharf Quays with a Marina, over 95 designer shop outlets, sophisticated bars and restaurants, 14 screen vue cinema and bowling complex. The Spinnaker Tower soars 170 metres into the sky above the harbour, step out onto view deck 1 and on a clear day you can see for 23 miles or more, dare to walk across the glass floor at the top of the tower.
Southsea beach is stony and has two piers, South Parade Pier and Clarence Pier, both contain amusement arcades; South Parade Pier also contains a ballroom and a bar, Clarence Pier is situated next to a permanent funfair. The D-day Museum which houses the Overlord Embroidery and Southsea Castle are also located within the seafront as are miniature golf courses, a skateboard park and public tennis courts. The Blue Reef Aquarium is also situated on the seafront.
Just away from the seafront is Southsea Model Village which contains forty miniature buildings, houses, forts, castles and a railway. It was opened in 1956 on the site of a Victorian fort; another part of the fort has been converted into Southsea Rose Garden.
The Kings Theatre situated in Albert Road, is a venue that hosts a variety of performances. In October the BUPA Great South Run takes place in Southsea and Portsmouth and is Britain’s leading 10-mile running event. A fast flat route in Southsea, Portsmouth is the ideal course to record a personal best and is regarded as one of the most popular road races in the United Kingdom.
