Powder Keg Cottage
About the home
Powder Keg Cottage is a historical building built in 1919 originally a warehouse to store the Navy's gunpowder, hence its name. It has been recently converted to a luxury home, only one of 4 cottages enjoying this unique situation (2 of which are available with Harringtons), with the character of the property sympathetically retained. Set in a beautiful waterside location, this property enjoys stunning panoramic views across the water and of the historical dockyard with its many Royal Navy ships.
The particular cottages features three bedrooms. The master en suite double bedroom has the choice of either two singles OR a king double bed, the second double bedroom has 2 single beds and the 3rd small bedroom has a single bed. There is a double sofa bed in the living room if required (additional rental payable for 5-7 guests).
In addition there are two bathrooms, downstairs cloakroom. The fully fitted kitchen/dining area overlooks the patio garden with sea views.
The property was graded 5 stars by the English Tourist Board in 2008 and 2009, with the inspector's comments including "It is very pleasing to see an excellent standard of cleanliness throughout the house" and "This property presents to a very high standard throughout".
The bedrooms have beautiful Laura Ashley furnishings and quality bedding from John Lewis ensuring no detail has been left untouched which enable our guests to enjoy a wonderful, luxurious stay.
Guest Book comments
"Dear Fiona, our feedback on our stay is very positive. The house was exactly as presented on your site. We would definitely book again with Harrington Homes!
Wendie Krak, Luxembourg (July & August 2011)
"Thank you for the swift return of our deposit. We had a brilliant stay in Powder Keg Cottage. The situation is so lovely and peaceful with the most wonderful views, we felt immediately relaxed. We did manage a trip to the Explosion Museum and a ferry trip across to Gunwharf Quays in the sunshine. We'd love to stay again when we have more time to do it justice."
Emma Noble (July 2011)
"We absolutely loved the house and hope to come back next year. It was exceptionally clean and beautifully presented. The views are amazing and we all had a lovely time. Just wish we could have stayed longer."
Kim Ledingham (June 2011)
"My brother, his family and I had a really enjoyable time at Powder Keg Cottage, the views and the close proximity to the water was delightful and we spent each evening and morning watching the various water birds, including a little egret which neither of us has seen before outside a bird sanctuary. Thank you again for all the smooth organization."
Ann Inman, (May & June 2011)
"We had a fantastic time, the cottages were lovely and the view and weather absolutely amazing. We all thought the cottages were to a very high standard and beautifully furnished. Thank you for all your help we were all so happy that we had a wonderful time together."
Gillian Cottle, (Easter 2011) (Gunpowder & Powder Keg Cottages)
"We had a fantastic time. Talk about wish we were still there.....! Everything was lovely. Couldn't find the washing machine instructions so had to guess. Will most definitely be using you again!"
Jennie Barton, (April 2011)
"Powder Keg Cottage was way beyond our expectations. Jane was very welcoming and helpful, the house was lovely and clean and the welcome pack was a really nice touch. In all our time renting holiday homes around the country and abroad, we would say that Powder Keg would definitely feature in our top three. We would recommend the Jolly Roger pub to any future visitors, wonderful service and excellent food. Thank you once again for your professional support and assistance and wishing you a happy and prosperous New Year."
Neil Ross (New Year 2009/10)
"We have just arrived back home and are already missing the views across the harbour. We never closed the curtains once during our stay for fear of missing something. Thanks for all the arrangements, it was a fantastic cottage."
Tony Weatherburn (November 2008)

BookThe Central Southern England / Hampshire region
Hampshire is a popular holiday area, with tourist attractions including its many seaside resorts, the maritime area in Portsmouth, and the motor museum at Beaulieu. The New Forest National Park lies within the borders, as does a large area of the South Downs, which is also scheduled to become a National Park. Hampshire has a long maritime history and two of England's largest ports lie on its coast. The county is famed as home of the writers Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.
Hampshire has a milder climate than most areas of the British Isles, being in the far south with the climate stabilising effect of the sea, but protected against the more extreme weather of the Atlantic coast.
The Portsmouth / Gosport area
We are located in the beautiful Portsmouth area of The Solent. From the cottage you can view yachts passing by, cruise ships leaving the dockside and Royal Navy ships. A 5 minute drive brings you to the beach with lovely views of the Isle of Wight. The area offers visitors a variety of natural, historical and naval attractions, as well as beautiful coastal walks.
We are able to arrange for rib rides and sailing days on The Solent, which is a great way of exploring what the area has to offer.
Gunwharf Quays have a range of excellent waterfront restaurants and bars as well as the Historical Dockyard where you can visit The Warrior, Nelson's famous ship The Victory and The Mary Rose - to name just a few!
A superb network of public transport includes a foot passenger ferry from Gosport to Portsmouth (a 5-minute journey), and regular train services ensuring easy access to all areas in Hampshire.
You have the choice of two beaches whilst on holiday here. Stokes Bay Beach with its unspoilt coastline, wine bar and bistro and wonderful views.. Popular for sunbathing, sailing and windsurfing. Lee on Solent Beach is located a ten minute drive from the property, offering a variety of restaurants with many jetskiers and kitesurfers enjoying the facilities available.
