The Island View
Apartment | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Newly available for rent from March 2013, 'The Island View' is a beautiful 2 bedroom penthouse apartment in a premier location on the boundary of Victorian Southsea and Historic Old Portsmouth, boasting a balcony and stunning panoramic sea views, over Southsea Common to the Solent and the Isle of Wight. Accommodating a maximum of four people, it is comfortably furnished to a very high standard, and comprises a lounge/diner with french doors to the balcony, 2 double bedrooms (both with double beds, one with sea views), a fully equipped kitchen and fully tiled bathroom with bathtub and shower. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a summer break, with a southern aspect ensuring the apartment is a light-filled, sunny spot all day long where guests can while away the hours watching the never-ending boating activity on the Solent. The balcony is the perfect spot to enjoy at any time of day, from morning coffee to an evening glass of wine at sunset. With double glazing, gas central heating and a fireplace with living-flame gas fire the apartment is also cosy in winter. Located midway between Gunwharf Quays and Central Southsea (each a 10 minute walk), and just a few minutes walk from the beach, it is at the centre of all the activity on offer in the local area, but also a quiet oasis high above the hurly-burly and set well-back from busy roads.
The apartment is located in an elegant 19th century period property, reflective of a bygone era, in a Conservation area on the edge of Southsea Common. It offers the comforts of a home-away-from-home, but with the facilities expected of an excellent hotel, including a complimentary welcome pack of breakfast supplies, tea and coffee, bedlinen, towels, toiletries, wifi and complimentary on-street parking, as well as end-of-stay cleaning, all included in the price.
PLEASE NOTE: The apartment is situated on the third floor and there is no elevator, so it is regrettably unsuitable for anyone with restricted mobility or who would otherwise have difficulty with the stairs.
Check-in from 3pm; check-out at 11am. (Please enquire for earlier / later times).

Whether you prefer to have fun by the coast, visit stately homes and beautiful gardens, walk or drive through beautiful countryside, ride horses or cycle in National Parks, or go sailing on the Solent, one of the most famous yachting destinations in the world, it's all possible in this region and, most importantly, within a short distance of The Island View apartment. Here is just a taste of the activities you might enjoy within comfortable driving distance (20 to 40 miles / 30 to 70 km) for a day out:
Historic cathedral cities: Chichester (20 miles); Winchester (30 miles); Salisbury (40 miles).
Stately homes and gardens: National Trust properties within 20 to 40 miles include Petworth House, Uppark, Hinton Ampner; magnificent Arundel Castle; Broadlands Estate (former home of Earl Mountbatten).
Natural beauty: South Downs National Park; New Forest National Park.
Famous for sailing: Portsmouth; Isle of Wight; Hamble (home of the Royal Southern Yacht Club); Lymington.
Beaches: Southsea; The Witterings (near Chichester); Isle of Wight's many lovely beachside towns and villages; Bournemouth and Sandbanks /Studland Bay.
Other places of interest: Beaulieu National Motor Museum; Romsey Abbey; the many picturesque villages of the New Forest and South Downs.
Schedule of Spring / Summer 2013 special events in the region include:
Late Spring 2013: Opening of new £35 million Mary Rose Museum at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
July 2013: Goodwood Festival of Speed; Goodwood Revival; Glorious Goodwood (Goodwood House and Racetrack is near Chichester).
August 2013: Cowes Week, Isle of Wight - the highlight of the annual yachting calendar; Victorious Festival, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
September 2013: Southampton Boat Show.
October 2013: Great South Run.
As the above information suggests, you will be spoilt for choice for day trips by car or train, but if you prefer to leave the car at home and opt to explore the local area of Portsmouth and Southsea on foot, there is plenty of variety on the doorstep of The Island View apartment, with its ideal location on the border of Southsea and Historic Old Portsmouth, adjacent to Southsea Common and just a few minutes walk from the beach.
Southsea's attractions: 4 km promenade along the beach; Southsea Common, a lovely, well-tended and extensive open park with barbeque facilities, hosting many annual activities including visits from several circuses, a kite flying festival, the Southsea Show; lovely public gardens stretching for much of the length of the seafront with wonderful floral displays for most of the year; Canoe Lake with swans, ducks, pedaloes, model boat sailing; Clarence Pier with a modest-scale funfair offering a good variety of rides including waltzers, octopus, flume, roller coaster, children's rides; games arcades; crazy golf; indoor swimming pool; aquarium; tennis courts; shopping; bars and an excellent range of eateries.
Historic Old Portsmouth's attractions: from Clarence Pier follow the Millenium Walk along the seawall to Old Portsmouth, passing Gun Hill and the 13th century Garrison Church to the Hot Walls and Square and Round Towers and cobbled streets, beautiful cathedral and historic pubs of Old Portsmouth and Spice Island. The Walk continues by Camber Dock (home to Portsmouth's fishing fleet and the tugs which guide warships and other large vessels into Portsmouth Harbour) and on to Gunwharf Quays with the landmark Spinnaker Tower (170m high, offering stunning 360 degree views of the area) and a wide variety of designer retail outlets, restaurants and bars by the marina, as well as a multi-screen cinema, bowling alley and casino. A few minutes walk past Gunwharf brings you to the Historic Dockyard. Here history comes alive as you encounter the historic ships that helped shape British history, including Nelson's HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and Henry VIII's Mary Rose, which he watched from Southsea Castle as it sank tragically in the Solent in 1545. A £35million heritage project to build an internationally-renowned new Museum, bringing the hull of the ship together once more with many of the 19,000 artefacts that were raised with her from the seabed in 1982 and to complete the conservation of the ship, is close to completion. The new Mary Rose Museum is due to open in late Spring 2013 at the Historic Dockyard. Other attractions at the Dockyard include the opportunity to test your own skill, bravery and brain power in the action-packed high seas adventure that is 'Action Stations' and to take a 45 minute tour around Portsmouth Harbour aboard one of several modern and comfortable boats to see the ships of the modern Royal Navy fleet in port.
Other things to do locally:
Take the Hovercraft to Ryde, Isle of Wight - the terminal is a few minutes' walk from the apartment, adjacent to Clarence Pier, and the journey time to Ryde is around 10 minutes. Alternatively, take the Wightlink ferry from Gunwharf (5 minutes drive, and 30 minutes ferry crossing) if you would like to take your car and spend a day exploring the Isle of Wight. (Day Saver tickets are recommended, bookable in advance).
Enjoy a RIB ride on the Solent from Southsea beach.
Visit the D-Day Museum (see the Overlord Embroidery) and the Royal Marines Museum.
Children will love the Blue Reef Aquarium and the Pyramids Indoor Swimming Centre with fun pools, flumes, etc. - both located on Southsea seafront a short walk across the Common from The Island View apartment.
