The Central Southern England / Hampshire region
Hampshire is a varied county in the south of England, with a warm, dry climate. It has a variety of landcape types, including chalk downland to the north and east, heathy wooded areas in the New Forest area to the west, and a coastline with many creeks and inlets.
It is a popular holiday area; tourist attractions include its many seaside resorts, the maritime area of Portsmouth, the submarine museum in Gosport, the motor museum at Beaulieu and the New Forest, a National Park.
The coastal towns have developed into important ports and places for leisure sailing. These include the naval port of Portsmouth and the commercial port of Southampton, which is one of the busiest in the country owing partly to the fact that it has four tides a day. Popular places for leisure sailing include the yachting centre at Fareham.
Hampshire's county town is Winchester, a historic city with a Norman cathedral, that was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex and the seat of King Alfred. Development in the past thirty years has produced a conurbation consisting of the main towns of Winchester, Portsmouth and Southampton by Eastleigh, Fareham, Gosport and extending eastwards to Havant.
Hampshire has a milder climate than most areas of the British Isles, being in the far south with the climate stabilising effect of the sea, but protected against the more extreme weather of the Atlantic coast. Hampshire has a higher average annual temperature than the UK average at 9.8°C to 12°C, average rainfall at 741–1060 mm per year, and higher than average sunshine at over 1541 hours per year.
The Portsmouth / Gosport area
Whether it's a day trip, short break or week-end stopover, there's so much to enjoy and keep you busy in Gosport. Explore the fascinating history and heritage of the museums or extensive Waterfront.
A wonderful location is one of Gosport's main strengths. Its beautiful south facing beaches look out towards the Isle of Wight and the Solent.
Gosport's Naval History
Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower is a hands on, interactive museum set in Gosport's former gunpowder and munitions depot. It tells the story of naval warfare from the days of gunpowder to modern missiles.
Dive into the past and the future at The Royal Navy Submarine Museum, where you can take a guided tour of World War II submarine HMS Alliance, led by a submariner, or climb on board Holland I - the Navy's first submarine from 1901.
Out and About in Gosport
Gosport has a working brewery, Oakleaf Brewing Company. The family run brewery, produces a range of mouth-watering cask and bottle conditioned ales. Each award-winning beer has a distinct flavour of its own, so everyone is sure to find an ale to suit their taste. Tours must be pre-booked and beer is available to buy from the shop. Located off Gosport High Street.
Or take a leisurely sight-seeing cruise with the Gosport Ferry. Operating a range of cruises, May to September, taking in such scenic and beautiful locations as the Hamble, Beaulieu Rivers or Portsmouth Harbour, with superb views of the ships in dock and a stunning view of the Spinnaker Tower, it's the perfect way to spend the day.
During the summer months (April - October) you can take advantage of the Portsmouth Harbour Waterbus and enjoy both Portsmouth and Gosport's attractions. Why not take a tour of the harbour and stop off at four of the Harbour's top attractions including the Historic Dockyard and Explosion! Museum of Naval Power.
A short ferry ride away is Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth containing many high street outlet shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife.
Plenty to see and do for all age ranges.
