The Hebrides / Skye / Isle of Skye region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering. Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge.
For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline. Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
The Portree / Suladale area
The crofters’ hamlet of Suladale is a charming place over the sea to Skye situated between Portree and Dunvegan. A number of working crofts with livestock can still be seen here. Skye offers numerous visitor attractions including walking, fishing, bird-watching and horse riding at the stables close by. There’s so much to see and do - take a boat trip out to sea from Portree; explore Dunvegan Castle, or climb up the Cuillin Mountains. The fabulous summer ceilidhs and lively pub sessions are not to be missed on any visit to this area, and they are a fantastic experience for locals and island visitors alike! Find out where the local tipple comes from at the popular brewery in Uig. Portree offers a number of fine restaurants, a good assortment of interesting shops and workshops which showcase local skills in arts and crafts.

We had a lovely holiday in the cottage at suladale, it exceeded our expectations, the walk over the moors behind the cottage to the Iron age broch was a particular delight if wet in places Verified by FlipKey, a TripAdvisor company |
Guestbook for 2676 - The Old Cottage
The cottage is a delight, and well-placed for views over the landscape, whatever the weather. It's well-equipped and cosy, and close to local amenities whilst retaining a feeling of remoteness. Excellent location for exploring the beautiful north of Skye.

,The Old Cottage is lovely. Beautifully presented and in a great location for visiting the north of Skye. Would have no hesitation in recommending. Highlights of the holiday included The Lookout Bothy at Rubha Huish. Sadly no whales in sight but a great hideaway from the midges!
