The Hebrides/Skye region
The bothy is located on the Trotternish peninsular which is the most northern on Skye and is well known to be home to some of the most dramatic scenery on the island.
On the drive up the road from Portree (on the east side of the island), look across the Minch for the breathtaking views of the northwest mainland of Scotland from Applecross to Gairloch, with the islands of Raasay and Rona in the foreground and the mountains of Torridon behind.
Right behind the bothy and within easy walking/driving distance is the Quiraing, part of the Trotternish ridge. It is famed for its weird and wonderful rock formations which you walk into, including the Table, the Prison and the Needle. A drive up to the top is very interesting on the little hairpin road! The views are just incredible. Over the Quiraing road, you come to Uig which is the ferry terminal for the Western Isles. In summer, one can do a day trip there and back. Many people who stay at the bothy like to do an overnight stay during their week. Also near Uig is the Fairy Glen, used for filming the Narnia Chronicles.
Just a few miles down the road is Kilt Rock with it's huge waterfall and lovely views, another very popular visitor stop and just a couple of miles further on is the world famous Old Man of Storr.
Only a few miles north of the bothy, we have the northernmost tip of Skye with the Outlook, an MBA bothy, where you can sit and watch the ocean for whales and basking sharks and look across to the Shiant Islands and Outer Hebrides. There are sleeping platforms here too if you fancy spending the night! Further round the headland is the Museum of Island Life, a little group of thatched blackhouses. Well worth a visit. Skye's outdoor centre, Whitewave is also located here with loads on offer. Canoeing, sea kayaking, climbing and more!
Portree, the main town on the island, is 17 miles away and has a variety of shops, a Co op supermarket, the visitor information office and a selection of restaurants, pubs and cafes. Sligachan, beneath the mighty Cuillin mountain range is 9 miles further south of Portree and is the starting point for lots of interesting walks up and around the Cuillin or through the glen. Turn off here to the west for Glenbrittle and Carbost for incredible views of the mountains and lovely walks up the Fairy Pools and more. The road takes you down to a dead end at a lovely beach and campsite. At Carbost, you will find Talisker distillery and also one of the best pubs on Skye- the Old Inn.
Continue past the Carbost turnoff on the Sligachan road until reaching Dunvegan with its famous castle and the gorgeous white sands of Coral beach.
These are only a few highlights on the island. There are too many to mention and you'll find a week is just not long enough!
