The Hebrides / Skye / Isle of Skye region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering. Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge.
For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam. Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline.
Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
The Portree / Hungladder area
The small settlement of Hungladder is near the North coast of the Isle of Skye on the Trotternish peninsula. Hungladder is five miles from the village of Uig and is an old crofting community made up of typical little whitewashed cottages. The hamlet is well known for its spectacular rock formations along the coast, with The Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing two of the most dramatic and well-known amongst visitors. Other attractions in the area include Duntulm Castle which was once home to the Macdonald clan and there is a monument to Flora Macdonald near the area. This is a peaceful area but has much to recommend it as a holiday destination and a base to discover this magical Isle.

It was very quiet, but the weather was`nt good. We had a lot of rain and it was cold, but we enjoyed the stay. The house was cold and humid too. Isle of Skye is very beautyful and there is a lot to... more |
Guestbook for 2677 - Heatherlea Cottage
The owner was very friendly; explained everything very well and gave good tips for sightseeing. The eggs of his friendly chickens were excellent and of course the glass of whisky he offered was too. It will surely not be the last time we spend our holidays on the Isle of Skye - we will certainly come again.
