The Isle of Skye region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering. Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge. For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam. Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline. Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
Portree area
The natural harbour is the stunning backdrop of Portree, which boasts a tremendous variety of shops, restaurants and hotels. The Aros Centre hosts a number of events such as cinema, concerts and theatre. If outdoor activities are the order of the day then these are well catered for with plenty of walks, climbing and kayaking opportunities within stunning scenery. Trotternish Ridge is a magnificent rock formation that stretches continuously for 31km and offers both novice and more challenging climbing opportunities. For more gentle pursuits, visit the Talisker Distillery Visitor Centre or Dunvegan Castle. The Museum of Highland Life gives visitors a chance to see how the region has changed over the centuries and the Flora MacDonald monument at Kilmuir is well worth visiting. Portree has so much to offer holiday makers whatever their idea of a perfect holiday may be. It is a fabulous location for all year round enjoyment.

Guestbook for 2025
A lovely property where it felt that you were staying in someone's family home. Mr & Mrs Peter, Bath, Somerset May 2008
The owner of the property was very friendly and pleasant to deal with as were the Sykes staff. The property itself was lovely, very spacious and in an excellent location for exploring Skye. We particularly liked that it had central heating and the kitchen had all of the facilities you could possibly need. We also felt that it was good value for money. Miss Barr, Paisley, Renfrewshire September 2007
Location very good for exploring Skye on our first visit. Loved the mature garden and the birds. Also loved all of the art work and nick-nacks around the house-they made it feel homely. The cottage was very comfortable, cosy and relaxing. Mrs Doran, Edinburgh, Midlothian July 2007
