The West Country / Cornwall region

There is so much more to Cornwall than just fabulous scenery and beautiful beaches. The history of this county is rich and vivid, and never more so than when remnants of its past are stumbled upon during rambling walks through the countryside.

Towns and villages that date back hundreds of years, with stories of wreckers and legends of old are there to be imagined when walking through narrow winding streets down to the harbour. And to bring you bang up to date there are modern art galleries to discover plus fantastic shopping with high street stores and unique boutiques and craft shops.

Cornwall has played a special part in many a movie and tv series with production crews immortalising many a Cornish location for the world to see.

Portreath area

Portreath lies on Cornwall's magnificent North-western coastline, it occupies a picture-postcard valley setting of woods, streams and fine rural meadow-land, with its crowning glory being the beach lying beneath rugged cliffs topped with springy turf and heathers.Sit and enjoy the stunning sunset.

The resort offers lovely coastal walks taking in the breathtaking panorama of the bay, a sandy beach for sunbathing, and for the more energetic Portreath is a renowned surfing location. Wetsuits and boards can be hired locally. In the village, and less than five minutes walk from Pugwash Cottage, there are three excellent pubs serving great food and local real ales in a typically relaxed Cornish manner. A bakery offers lovely fresh bread and cakes daily and of course, the highlight of your holiday, traditional Cornish pasties!
For visitors wishing to discover the rich industrial heritage of the region there are plenty of old mine relics to be discovered in the area as well as mining museums in restored mines.

Portreath has a lovely pastoral hinterland where you can wander at will amongst woods or down leafy lanes to find an abundance of rare plants, fragile wild flowers, and a healthy range of wildlife.
