The West Country / Cornwall region
Cornwall is such a beautiful place and a variety of holiday styles can be thoroughly enjoyed here. Whether you prefer an active holiday where you can go surfing and enjoy other watersports, or you like to go walking and take in the beautiful sights on the County's many coastal paths, or you just prefer to take things easy and relax on a beach holiday - Portreath in Cornwall is the place for you!
Now even more easily accessible with the new addition to the A30, there is no excuse for avoiding the journey - the benefits will be so worth it! Portreath is ideally centrally located to visit so many Cornish attractions. Visit St Ives and the Tate Gallery, the world famous Eden Project, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, the wonderful Minack Theatre, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and even the Cornish Gold Centre which is just up the road - the options are absolutely endless and a holiday pack will be provided at "Harbour Retreat" for you to peruse and decide which of the many attractions you would like to visit.
Portreath area
Portreath was a key place in Cornish industrial history and was above all a mineral harbour. However, it also provided a holiday base for the working populations of the Camborne-Redruth mining districts in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The construction of Portreath Harbour is thought to have begun in 1760 and by 1827 it was described as perhaps the most important port in Cornwall. It has strong links with South Wales where coal was procured and Cornish copper smelted. Hundreds of men left here for South Wales on the coal ships, making their way via copper ore barques to work as miners in Cuba in the 1830s and 40s. The Portreath Tramroad (1809) and the Portreath branch of the Hayle railway (1838) linked the mines in the Camborne/Redruth and Gwennap mining districts with the port. The Hayle railway is marked by a major piece of railway engineering, the Portreath Incline (see Photo No 15) - this famous Incline is clearly visible from the main bedroom and patio area of "Harbour Retreat".
The former Mineral Tramroad now provides an excellent bicycle trail from the north coast at Portreath along to the south coast at Devoran and this can be joined just over the road from the property (if you need to hire bikes, visit The Bike Barn at Elm Farm on the outskirts of the village).
Portreath village is suited to families and couples and is extremely popular with surfers. The village offers a variety of pubs to suit those looking for a quieter time and also those who may prefer something a bit livelier (The Waterfront regular hosts local bands and acts). The nearest clubs can be found in Redruth and Camborne, just a 10 minute drive away. The cathedral city of Truro is about 25 minutes away and boasts many lively bars and some great clubs; for an even wilder night-life Newquay is about 30 mins drive away! There is a bus-stop just across the road from the property and Redruth train station is only about 10 minutes away.
For dining out, as well as 3 pubs, the village boasts a very good Chinese restaurant and a couple of cafes - all eateries offer great food and service.
"Harbour Retreat" is ideally situated in The Square above a small parade of shops - a Costcutter shop (which also houses a post office), a cafe bistro, a Bodyboard shop and also Portreath Bakery which offers the most amazing Cornish Pasties! The famous Portreath Harbour is just over the road, less than 50 metres from the property. The beach is within a few minutes easy walk along the harbour side. The nearest golf course is at Tehidy 1.5 miles away (a couple of minutes drive or perhaps a 30 minute walk). Tehidy Country Park is certainly worth a visit - it is the largest single area of woodland in West Cornwall - some 250 acres! It offers over 9 miles of footpaths and trails and also bridle tracks. Children will love feeding the swans in the large south lake! There is also a golf course in the other direction at Radnor Golf & Ski Centre, a 5 minute drive away. Radnor has a fun indoor ski machine where instructors will teach you to ski from scratch or you can have lessons to brush up on your technique before your Winter holiday!
