The West Country / Cornwall region
CORNWALL - the ancient Celtic land in the far South West of the British Isles - land of romance, mystery, folklore and legend.
It has breathtakingly beautiful natural scenery with over 700 kms of some the world most amazing coastline, studded with long sandy beaches, secluded coves, wooded river valleys, and small fishing villages - a dream location. It enjoys the mildest of climates, and the further west you travel, the more unspoilt and wild the scenery becomes. The west of Cornwall is a haven for walkers with miles of coastal path to explore.
This beautiful part of the West Country has something for everyone - perfect for traditional family holidays, romantic hideaways and is a special place to get away from it all. Inland it has beautiful rolling countryside to explore excellent visitor attractions and many country houses and award winning gardens which keep people coming back again and again.
Cornwall is famous for its wealth of mining heritage – iconic engine houses still dot the landscape - a legacy of the bygone days of mining. The old mineral tramways are being made accessible to the walker, cyclist and horse rider. One of the best known of these is the coast to coast trail which links the historic mining harbours of Portreath on the north coast and Devoran on the south coast. There are RSPB reserves at Hayle Estuary and at Marazion Marsh.
The West of Cornwall is a fantastic region with a rich and diverse history, many country houses and estates open to the public, excellent water sports, golf courses and of course no visit to the area is complete without a day-trip to the sub-tropical Scilly Isles by boat, plane or helicopter from Penzance.
Portreath area
Several circular walks start in and around the village Stroll along a beautiful leafy woodland footpath to nearby Tehidy Golf Course, and Country Park which has its abundant wildlife and nature trails and a lake with swans. Cycling; Walkers and cyclists can follow an interesting route along the old Mineral Tramway from Portreath to beautiful Penpol Creek on the South coast (Approx 11 miles - bikes can be hired nearby).
This area has some of the most beautiful beaches and coastal scenery in Cornwall - we are truly spoilt for choice. Local beaches include: Godrevy, Hayle Towans, Carbis Bay and St Ives just a few miles to the South and Porthtowan, Chapel Porth St Agnes, Perranporth and Newquay to the North.
The Coastal footpath runs through the village with miles of spectacular coastline in either direction. A few hundred metres along the footpath from Portreath towards Godrevy and St Ives takes you along a stretch of the coast know locally as 'The North Cliffs' - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with breathtaking sea views and majestic cliffs.
A large colony of Grey Seals live and breed along the North Cliffs Coast. They come ashore to have their pups on several of the remote coves near Portreath and at Godrevy in the Autumn and can often be seen swimming a few metres off the beach at Portreath and sometimes venture into the harbour. Pods of Dolphins have been seen swimming along the coast often quite close to the shore.
Learn to surf and have fun body-boarding - surfing lessons, board and wetsuit hire in Portreath with another surf school just along the coast at Godrevy.
