The Dumfries and Galloway region

Just over the English border lies Dumfries and Galloway in the west and the Scottish Borders in the east. These two very distinctive areas have retained a totally rural and tranquil atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a wonderful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact here you'll find miles of beautiful untouched countryside and striking coastlines; a great place for outdoors holidays, fishing, walking, sailing and cycling. Coastal and beach strolls and small fishing harbours waiting to be explored. The capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, is probably on most people's ‘must visit' list and with good reason. The city is renowned for its magnificent architecture and historical buildings, which include Edinburgh Castle and numerous museums and galleries. Today Edinburgh is a thriving modern city with world class shops and restaurants and lots of traditional atmospheric pubs.

Portpatrick is a charming fishing village dating back almost 500 years. Combining stunning scenery with picturesque landscapes and views over the Irish Coast, this beautiful coastal village is perched on the extreme south-westerly tip of mainland Scotland. Boasting a number of excellent walks, including those over cliff tops and along beautiful sandy beaches, those with a passion for exploring the outdoors are well catered for in the surrounding areas. Also boasting a pretty harbour, several golf courses and a number of excellent wildlife spotting opportunities, the village has something to offer visitors of all ages. The village also lies at the heart of the Southern Upland Way, one of Scotland's most famous long distance footpaths. Also nearby is the famous Mull of Galloway, a scenic centre boasting awe inspiring views over mainland Scotland, the Isle of Man, England and Ireland, a real beauty spot not to be missed by those who appreciate a good photographic opportunity. Visitors can also take a day trip to Ireland on a high speed ferry, a good chance to add an additional adventure to your holiday!
