The Dumfries and Galloway region

Just over the English border lies Dumfries and Galloway in the west and the Scottish Borders in the east. These two very distinctive areas have retained a totally rural and tranquil atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a wonderful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact here you'll find miles of beautiful untouched countryside and striking coastlines; a great place for outdoors holidays, fishing, walking, sailing and cycling. Coastal and beach strolls and small fishing harbours waiting to be explored. The capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, is probably on most people's ‘must visit' list and with good reason. The city is renowned for its magnificent architecture and historical buildings, which include Edinburgh Castle and numerous museums and galleries. Today Edinburgh is a thriving modern city with world class shops and restaurants and lots of traditional atmospheric pubs

Portpatrick

Viewers of the award winning BBC drama ‘Two thousand Acres of Skye' will already have seen something of this stunning region of South-West Scotland as the lovely coastal village of Port Logan provided the main location for the series. Visitors to this area are generally pleasantly surprised by the mildness of the climate – due mainly to the warming effects of the Gulf stream- and always impressed by the number of high-quality public gardens. The Logan Botanic Gardens for example, located close to Port Logan, has an amazing collection of rare and obscure plants and is definitely worth a visit. The beautiful and much-loved heritage village of Portpatrick should also be on the ‘to do' list. Its bustling little harbour is the venue for a broad range of events and entertainment throughout the holiday season and the village is well served for food and drink outlets. Portpatrick is also the designated starting point for the Southern Upland Way. This is one of Scotland's official long distance footpaths and traverses the country all the way to Cockburnspath on the east coast- a distance of 212 miles! The Galloway Forest Park also provides a superb day out. It is spread over three hundred square miles and contains superb walking and championship standard mountain-biking trails. It is the only designated Dark Sky Park in the UK – one of only a handful in the whole world- and offers a glistening night sky that is one of the true wonders of the natural world to behold.

"lovely cottage, but a bit isolated, definitely need a car."

Lovely cottage, needs blackout curtains in the bed rooms, also needs some lamps in the lounge.grab rails in the showers would be a great help for the more elderly. The lighting in the kitchen was poor. All in all we had a great week and enjoyed the cottage very much.
