Brand new to the holiday letting market in 2011, Kenmuir Cottage is a beautifully-presented traditional Galloway home, built in the 1860s and set in its own large private garden. The cottage was lovingly restored by the owners in 2010-2011, and equipped with new furniture throughout, but still retains its rustic charm.

Inside, the cottage boasts a newly-equipped kitchen with solid wood floor, a comfortable living room with Dowling stove, a double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with a bunk bed.

Outside, the cottage has a large fenced private garden, mainly grassed over, where it is lovely to sit and unwind in the sun with a glass of wine, or have a BBQ. There are a few fir trees in the garden to provide a wind break, and a large hedge for privacy. The cottage is situated on a farm road with little passing traffic, and there is a large secure shed where the BBQ set is stored. You can also use it for storing cycles, fishing/walking gear, and outdoor equipment. A small fishing boat can be kept in the garden if required.

From the garden you can see the North Channel with the coast of Ireland in the distance. At night, the dark skies mean you can clearly see the Milky Way, which is not normally visible in towns and cities. There is an abundance of wildlife, including roe deer, owls, hares, swallows, buzzards, hawks, pheasants, grouse and seals.

Local attractions include Logan Botanic Garden, the Mull of Galloway (Scotland's most southerly point), Logan Fishpond, and the villages of Port Patrick and Port Logan with their harbours, shops, and restaurants.

Best of all it is one of the quietest holiday destinations in Scotland.

A large and comfortable living room has a wood-burning stove supplemented by electric radiators. A plentiful supply of wood and a starter pack of coal is supplied.

There is a large L-shaped sofa-bed, a Sony 40" flat screen TV with Freesat HD, and a Sony BluRay/DVD player which will also play your favourite CDs and allow you to listen to the radio. There is a selection of DVDs available for you to watch, together with a collection of books and board games. Internet access via free WiFi is available so you can keep in touch whilst you are on holiday.

There is a large comfortable bedroom with a double bed, and a smaller bedroom with a bunk bed. Both have electric radiators and blackout curtains, and good quality bed linen, duvets, and duvet covers are all provided.

Small children and babies are welcome, and a cot, crib and high-chair are available.

There is a bath fitted with an electric shower, and a separate toilet. A good selection of good-quality towels is provided.

The well-appointed kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher, washing machine, electric oven and hob, microwave, toaster, kettle, and a large fridge/freezer. We provide tea, coffee, sugar, kitcen rolls, washing-up liquid, soap, dishwasher tablets, liquid for the washing machine, fabric conditioner, cleaning materials.

A porch, where you can hang your coats and leave your boots, leads to a large bright hallway, and a melamine picnic set in a backpack is available if you want to have an "away day".

The cottage has a large fenced private garden, mainly grassed over, where children and dogs can be safe and secure. There is a picnic bench which can seat six people, a garden bench which can seat three, and four sun-loungers. A volleyball, badminton, and tennis set, plus some footballs, will keep the kids occupied whilst you relax.

There is a large secure shed for storing cycles, fishing/walking gear, and outdoor equipment. A rotary clothes dryer is also available.

The cottage is situated on a farm road with little passing traffic. Three cars can be parked directly outside the cottage on the grass verge, whilst a gate gives access to the garden where additional vehicles, trailers or boats can be parked.

A welcome pack consisting of quality wine, chocolates, tea, coffee, sugar and many other useful items is provided on arrival. The owners will be available to hand over the keys, answer any questions, and show you around the property.

The Dumfries and Galloway region

Dumfries and Galloway stretches across the South West of Scotland, from the port of Stranraer in the west to Gretna in the east. Towns include Newton Stewart, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries, Moffat and Lockerbie, and the region is mainly agricultural. The famous Belted Galloway cows, with their black and white colouring, are seen everywhere, and Galloway is one of the largest producers of milk and cheese in the country.

The coastline is one of the most varied in Scotland - from long beautiful sandy beaches to craggy clifftop walks, and the region boasts Scotland's most southerly point at the Mull of Galloway. From there you can see not only Scotland and England, but also Ireland and the Isle of Man which are both just 22 miles away.

The climate is very temperate, and the Rhins of Galloway was one of the few places in the UK that was largely free of snow in the heavy snowfalls during the winter of 2010-2011. Indeed, due to the Gulf Stream, the weather is so mild that many gardens in South Rhins have palm trees, and Logan Botanic Gardens, just 3 miles to the SE of the cottage, has many exotic plants from all over the world.


The idyllic countryside around the cottage is ideal for exploring, walking, rambling, hillwalking, cycling, driving, birdwatching, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and camping.

South of the cottage, a 15 minute walk along the seashore will take you to sandy Ardwell Bay - one of the nicest and quietest beaches in the area. The bay is a beautiful place to relax, swim, fish, picnic or have a BBQ.

Sandhead is the nearest village and it has a small Post Office and shop selling a wide range of groceries, papers, and cards. The Tigh na Mar Hotel and bar in Sandhead offers meals drinks. There is also the most beautiful 7 mile stretch of sandy beach on Luce Bay. The beach is safe and the waters warm, and the bay makes a great playground for children and adults alike. Kirkmadrine Church, with some of the earliest Christian burial stones on view, is located directly between the cottage and Sandhead.

The Mull of Galloway, by Drummore, Scotland's most southerly point, is one of the most popluar places to visit for sea fishing expeditions, and the waters along the coast are ideal for boat or beach fishing. At the Mull of Galloway, which is now a nature reserve, you can visit the lighthouse, or wander round the rugged coastal paths, and on a clear days enjoy the fantastic views. There is a coffee house which nestles into the hillside just before reaching the Mull of Galloway.

Portpatrick is approximately 8 miles north of the cottage and is a lovely drive from Kenmuir Cottage. This beautiful little town, with a quaint and natural harbour, has several antique and gift shops, and is the end of the Southern Upland Way which crosses Scotland. The Portpatrick Hotel sits majesically on the cliff top looking down on the harbour. Both sides of the harbour offer fantastic walks along the cliff edge. On a sunny day, holidaymakers can sit outside the many hotels and guest houses and watch the little boats coming in and out of the harbour.

To the south of Portpatrick, the cliff-top walk leads to the ruins of Dunskey Castle, and to the north the walled garden, woodland walk, maze and tea room of Dunskey Estate are well worth visiting.
