Northern Portugal region
The country's longest motorway (A1, from Lisbon to Oporto) goes up to Braga (A3), in the heart of Costa Verde. If you follow the coastline on the road from Vila do Conde to Valença, you will not miss the beautiful beaches, seaside resorts and enchanting villages such as Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira. Inland and worthwhile visiting is the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Throughout the region the rivers, waterfalls, vineyards and fertile plots combine with the ancestral monuments in urban centers.
In the north-western part of the country lies this land of dense vegetation and profound historic wealth. It was here that Portugal's first king, Dom Afonso Henriques, was born in the beginning of the 12th century, having then extended the kingdom to the south, in what was considered as one of the most heroic feats of the Christian Reconquest.
The inheritance of a distant past is seen everywhere. One may en joy an abundant gastronomy, light, acidulous wines (vinhos verdes) and rich wines, and a variety of handicrafts that mingles the shine of' the filigree with the colour of the local embroideries.
Oporto, the capital of the country's northern regions, with its international t airport, offers the delights of a riverside city as it is magnificently situated on the mouth of the Douro river, from where boats leave to sail up the beautiful river.
Seaside Viana do Castelo, ecclesiastic Braga, and medieval Guimarães are but a few other examples of a happy alliance between popular heritage and cosmopolitan elegance.
Torre dos Clerigos, (The Clergy Tower) (Next to the apartment )
This baroque bell tower was completed in 1763 and looms high above the city. The tallest in Portugal, visitors can climb the 225 steps to enjoy the spectacular panorama. The adjoining oval-shaped Igreja dos Clérigos is an outstanding example of the synthesis of baroque and rococo architectural styles, featuring an intricate façade, elaborate engravings and a remarkable pipe organ dating back to 1774.
A visit to the clerigos tower till the top would be the right choice to get a complete view of Porto. It costs about 2 euros to enter the tower.
Cpf-Centro Português De Fotografia (Photography Museum) (In front of the Apartment)
The Portuguese Centre of Photography (CPF) has existed since 1997, created as a public service by the Ministry of Culture, to ensure a national policy for photography. Currently, it is protected by the Directorate General of Books, Archives and Libraries, whose mission is to protect, enhance and promote the photographic heritage.
Praça da Cordoaria (Cordoaria Gardens) (In front of Apartment)
The garden was founded by Viscount de Vilar d'Allen in 1865. The initial project is designed by the German landscape architect David Émile.
In 1941, a cyclone changed the very look of this romantic garden.
Following the redevelopment of urban European Cultural Capital Porto 2001 the garden was the target of a coordinated intervention by architect Camilo Courtier.
Livaria Lello (Lello Bookshop) (2mins from Apartment)
Along with Bertrand in Lisbon, it is one of the oldest bookshops in Portugal. In 2011, the Australian Travel Guides and Guidebooks editor Lonely Planet classified Livraria Lello as the third best bookshop in the world.
Sé Catedral (Sé) (5mins from Apartment)
Porto’s imposing cathedral was completed in the 13th century, although many aspects of the design have changed over the centuries. Featuring ornate carvings, paintings, sculptures and sacred religious treasures, as well as a marble chapel, a Romanesque rose window and intricate baroque azulejos throughout the cloister and terrace, the cathedral’s mesmerising grandeur is truly breathtaking.
Caves do Vinho do Porto (Port wine cellars) (Vila Nova de Gaia - 7mins from apartment)
Opposite the centre of Porto, on the southern bank of the Douro river, numerous Port wine lodges are a prominent tourist attraction. This sweet, fortified wine is produced from grapes grown in the Douro region and transferred to the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia where it is blended and aged. Visitors can spend days touring the cavernous cellars along the waterfront (there are over 50 to choose from), while sampling dozens of world-class port varieties.
Museu de Serralves (Museum of Contemporary Art Porto) (20mins from Apartment)
Surrounded by the extensive Serralves gardens, which is also used as an outdoor exhibition area, the Museu de Serralves was designed by renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Featuring an outstanding collection of national and regional contemporary art dating from the 1960s, the museum also hosts a selection of cultural events, including concerts and educational workshops for children.
