The Donegal region

Narin & Portnoo

The Dawros Peninsula separates Gweebarra Bay from the Bays of Loughrosmore and Loughrosbeg and its landscape is dotted with numerous tiny lakes and a quilt of low hills. Portnoo is a harbour hamlet with shop, and Narin is a sister beach area (with golf club, pub, cafe, restaurant and shop) 5 minutes walk away.

The nearest towns are Ardara and Glenties both about 12 kilometres away Donegal Town and Letterkenny about 40 kilometres away. Nearby Rosbeg also has several safe sandy beaches and a friendly pub.

About Narin & Portnoo

Narin Strand, a Blue Flag Beach, is 5 minutes walk from Aranview. The beach at Portnoo Harbour is a 5 minute walk from the house in the opposite direction. Rosbeg and Tramore also have great beaches near by. A stunning walk at low tide from Narin Strand is Inishkeel island with its ancient church and graves.

Traditional villages of Ardara and Glenties are a must visit. Worth a trip for great scenery is Glengesh Pass, The Kilclooney Dolmen and Fintown Railway. For fishing the Tor Mor Charter Boat can be booked or take a short drive to Lough Finn or Lough Muck for wild brown Trout.

A world class18 hole links golf course is also situated just behind Narin Strand called Narin and Portnoo. It features as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world as named by Golf World magazine.

Portnoo

To do – walking, golfing, swimming, sailing, cycling, eating, drinking ... – there is lots to do in the beautiful Portnoo and wider Donegal area. Some ideas are below:

• Water sports. Boating and surfing can also be enjoyed with some of the best Blue Flag beaches within easy reach including Narin beach which is 0.4 miles away. Narin beach is a favourite for bodyboarding, kitesurfers and windsurfers. Nearby Dooey Beach is great for surfers.

• Walking – on one of the many beaches at or near Portnoo, on Ireland's second largest wild life reserve, Sheskinmore, is a 5 minute drive away. It is a stunning walk at all times of the year. Access is on foot; walk through the dunes near the caravan site at Rosbeg. The truly spectacular Slieve League, the highest sea cliffs in Europe, is only 40 minutes away. Park at the first carpark and walk to the top to see the cliffs.

Closeby is Glencolmcille, an archaeologically rich Pagan and Christian centre, with its fascinating folk village. A scenic hour drive to the north is Glenveagh National Park, with the most romantic castle perched on the side of majestic Lough Veagh.

• Cycling. Beautiful and challenging cycles. Bikes are not included with the house. There is a cycle hire shop in Ardara during peak season.

• Archaeological sites such as ancient Doon Fort and the Dolmen at Kilclooney, within walking distance.

• The Owenea River provides excellent salmon and trout fishing and is regarded as one of the best in the country. There is brown trout lake on the hill behind Aranview.

• Pony trekking along the beaches is also popular. Deans Farm Equestrian Centre in Bruckless. A half-hour or one hour or longer sessions are available at this facility.

• Boat hire and trips from Portnoo harbour with Tor Mor. For bookings ring 00353872458514 or email

• Kayaking by Sea Kayak www.northwestseakayaking.ie

• Jumping off Portnoo harbour when the tide is in is a favourite pastime of kids.

• Lough Doon Ring Fort is located on a small island in Lough Doon off the Portnoo to Rosbeg Road. On a nice day you can hire a boat and take a picnic at the Ancient fort once the home of Druid kings.

Golf

• Narin and Portnoo Golf Club (two minute drive) is considered to be one of the top natural links courses in Ireland. It is certainly one of the most scenic. http://www.narinportnoogolfclub.ie/. The clubhouse is also a nice spot for anyone to enjoy a drink or some food whilst watching the players come in.

• Donegal Golf Club at Murvagh is also an outstanding links golf course. It is continually featured in Golf World's Top 100 courses in Ireland and Great Britain. Darren Clarke has described it as “one of my favourite courses in the World”.

• Critch Island Golf Club. Set on the edge of the wild and rugged Atlantic ocean, you will savour unrestricted panoramic views. A 9 hole links course, where every shot must be methodically thought out.

• Bundoran golf course. A challenging par 70, the golf course sweeps along the rugged and picturesque Donegal Bay coastline with a mixture of dunes and undulating terrain.

Eating and Drinking

Aranview is fully equipped, but there are several places to try some of the great local seafood. There is Carnaween House in Portnoo (booking advised), and Joe's in Rosbeg. Nancy's and Charlie's West End Cafe in Ardara are also favourites of the owners
