3 minutes to one of the best beaches in Sardinia, to the nearest bar and great seafood restaurant recently featured by Rick Stein in his BBC series. 5 minutes further on is the harbour village of Buggerru. The area has numerous quality restaurants which are in easy five or ten minute drive from the house and none of which is expensive. Great places to watch the beautiful sunsets over the sea enjoyed on the western side of the island whilst enjoying the very best in Italian and Sardinian food. The tourist information site has details of restaurants and some great photography - http://www.startuno.it/en/restaurants.html
This coastal location just below the Costa Verde really is one of the best spots on the island close to some of the finest and yet least crowded beaches, such as the closest at Portixeddu, a fantastic 3km long sandy beach, Scivu, Picinas and Cala Domestica. Scivu has the largest sand dunes in Europe. Cala Domestica, by contrast, has a sandy beach surrounded by rocky cliffs, a sheltered bay and fantastic snorkelling.
As you can see from the photographs, there are no high-rise buildings, in fact recent changes in the law now prevents building within 3km of the sea. The UNESCO listed area of Sulcis Iglesiente is surrounded by mountains, a great location for trekking, mountain or road biking especially the cooler months and is close to the Temple of Antas (Tempio di Antas) and other historical sites.
There are several established rock climbing venues in this area, and the European surfing championships are often held there. It is a great area for wind surfing. There are opportunities for horse/donkey trekking including a popular full day trip across the hills to Scivu beach. Great snorkelling in lovely rocky bays and some excellent sea fishing within five minutes drive. Plenty of space around you for games on the beaches, even in August, makes a refreshing change from other parts of Europe.
Set back just a few minutes from the beach down a little used country road (ideal for cycling safely to the beach with children) this new villa has all new furniture and modern conveniences and is set in very private grounds. The setting is idyllic, to breakfast on the balcony is a lovely experience in itself with fantastic views and total quiet. The large barbecue/oven, the tranquil picturesque setting and lovely dining area on the balcony combine to make for lovely evenings at the house after a hard day at the beach! The large natural grounds offer children the chance to explore and for imaginative play in safety. The new outdoor shower is handy for both kids and sunbathers to cool down.
It is occasionally possible for guest parties and friends (max 10) to hire and enjoy a skippered 7m RIB for diving, snorkelling , fishing, general bayhopping, swimming in beautiful locations and trips to cosmopolitan Carloforte (a great lunch stop). Adveturous adults and children alike are able to try our kneeboards, wakeboards and skis, in beautiful surroundings. The Predator 660 Rib can be seen in the foreground of the Carloforte photo, it offers a fantastic opportunity to see and experience the islands coastline and otherwise inaccessible bays from the sea. Please enquire for full details and availability during your stay at the time of booking.
This viila is English owned, we bought the land in 2004 and built the house slowly over the next few years, it really is a lovely part of the island, with the very best in scenery and beaches but without the expensive day to day living costs that you may find in other parts of the island. We know the area well and have left some very useful area tips in a visitors book and this has been added to by our various guests. With tips ranging from where to find the local spring to refill your water bottles, to which butcher sells the best sardinian sausage!, we hope it helps to get you settled in and your holiday started in the area. There are also English books and DVD's to entertain guests. Should you wish to have a chat about the area or the villa please contact us (after 4pm on weekdays, anytime at weekends) Thank you for your interest.

The main bedroom has a kingsize bed and the second bedroom has two single beds along with a pull out third single bed. The sofa bed in the lounge makes a further double bed. There are two good quality gents Mountain bikes and a mix of ladies and children's cycles for guest use.
Further details
Linen and ample towels are provided and included in the welcome pack/final cleanup charge (£90)
A useful tip for guests arriving on Sundays is to try to pick up some initial essential shopping en route to the house in the larger towns, as the local supermarket closes at lunchtime.
There are a number of stone steps to the house, although these are less in number and easier to climb than a standard staircase.
The guest boat trips should be booked as far in advance as possible. A boat of equal standard without a skipper/ or guide would typically be around £350 per day plus fuel. We ask for £195 for the first day (plus fuel) for up to ten guests and friends. By booking trips well in advance, we can organise a skipper for 'Ronin' and can then offer subsequent day trips at just £95!. We may need to ask that you book at least a couple of trips to cover our costs. However, at other times we may plan be on the island at the time, in which case we can offer lower rates. Guests have found this to be an excellent day out and a unique way to see the area's best features. Please enquire.
Conditions
Damage deposit of £150 payable at the time full fees become due, which is of course fully refundable after our cleaner has reported back to us.

The Sardinia region

Short mild winters and long hot summers, Sardinia enjoys sunshine for more than 300 days per year. Steeped in history, culture and tradition, the island remains largely unspoilt and appeals to those seeking a tranquil holiday.
The beaches and bays are stunning, and there are many ancient historical sites. The food in Sardinia is a big attraction, organically grown, traditional Italian and Sardinian food, seafood restaurants aplenty and meat dishes are a speciality of the local farm guesthouses (Agriturismo). These usually offer a set menu when everything you eat and drink over several courses is home grown and prepared, a must visit for any foodloving visitor.

The Portixeddu / Fluminimaggiore area
Portixeddu is a charming beach village, the main attraction is the huge stretch of sand, which is never too crowded. Buggerru ia a lovely harbour village with a history in the mining of granite. The old mines tours offer a glimpse into that history along with a chance to cool down!!
Fluminimaggiore a five to ten minute drive from the villa is a village where there are many traditional festivals, as is Iglesias which is the nearest larger town. Cagliari the island capital is just over 1hrs drive away and offers all the sophistication of a major Italian city, along with the fashionable nearby Poetto beach.
Local activities include snorkelling, fishing, trekking and rock climbing. The area is popular with cyclists who use the challenging roads (very good road surfaces) in and out of the valley for serious training. It is a favoured location for serious cyclists including professional teams for winter training. Off road cycling is also a major pursuit in the area, and motorcyclists and Enduro enthusiasts flock to the area. See mountain biking images at http://www.sardinianatour.com/EN/152-activ-holidays-pula-cagliari-sardegna.html. Windsurfing and surfing are popular at Portixeddu and the European surfing championships have been held in the area. For some superb photography of the coastline see http://www.gentedisardegna.it/pop_printer_friendly.asp?TOPIC_ID=5336
Eating out is very affordable as this area is not expensive like other parts of the island. Agriturismo's in the area offer high quality traditional home made and home produced fayre, evenings there are often very memorable.
There is an excellent fish restaurant and Pizzeria in Portixeddu, both with fantastic bay views. Portixeddu is a 20 minute walk from the villa. A little closer is the Hotel Il Golfo Leone, which is also a restaurant and Pizzeria. A new Pizzeria on the nearby main road is also in easy walking distance. The highly recommended Agriturismo Biologico Fighezia is also close by. Book a couple of days in advance (they have an English speaking partner there) and you will enjoy a feast and an evening to remember for around 20 Euros a head, when all food and wine is home made and included in the price. There are numerous other restaurants in Fluminimaggiore and Buggerru, both a ten minute drive away. Just 1km away and highly recommended by us and recent guests is Trattoria Sole della Luna located in easy walking distance halfway between the beach and our house. The owner Luca's local red wine is also the best in the valley and included in the incredibly low price of 22.5€. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, and is closed Sunday and Monday.
Throughout the summer months, Buggerru, Fluminimaggiore and Portixeddu offer night-life, small concerts, traditional festivals and plenty of entertainment. See http://www.fluminimaggiore.org/eventi-e-manifestazioni.html for more info and some great pics of the area. The following link lists all the local folk festivals by date in English. http://www.sardegna.com/code/feste_popolari_int/subregion/3/LINGUA/EN. The following link has some detailed descriptions of Fluminimaggiore, some of the local attractions and areas of historical interest and in particular information about Iglesias, the nearest larger town with 100 churches!!!
http://www.tomysardinia.com/filen/501.htm. Outside summer like many areas of Sardinia, this location is very quiet and will appeal to those who wish to get away from it all.

Economy Flights from Ryanair are available from £10 each way inclusive of taxes into Alghero from Stansted and Dublin. These are year round. Alghero is a 3hr drive to the villa. From May to the end of September you can fly to Alghero from East Midlands Airport with BMIBABY (Sat 2 flights) . Easyjet fly direct from London (Luton and Stansted) to Cagliari the closest airport just over an hours drive away (flying time is c.2hrs20mins). In the summer months flights are daily - in autumn and winter they are three times a week from Luton www.easyjet.co.uk. Easyjet also have a service between Gatwick or Bristol to Olbia flying four days per week between May and October, Olbia being about 3hrs away by car. Jet2 have a Saturday service to Olbia from Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh between mid-may and late September.
We also recommend that from other locations, the northwest for example, that guests use Skyscanner to research two flights to Alghero or Cagliari, it is often possible to find return flights from Liverpool, Manchester and other UK airports via other European cities to Cagliari for as little as £30 return. Skyscanner does the research work for you!!.
Car hire is essential in Sardinia and costs about £180 per week. It is worth shopping around although often linked companies from the airlines offer good deals. Easyterra is another good site for sourcing carhire.
By Ferry from Genoa (Genova), Livorno, Piombino to Porto Torres or Olbia, Mobylines offer the most competitive prices, but other companies include Tirrenia, Grandi Navi Veloci and SNCM from France.

Lovely villa in a great location. Area steeped in history so plenty to explore if you can motivate yourself from state of deep relaxation that comes over you as soon as you arrive. Everything you need is provided, umbrellas for the beach, cool box for picnics, bikes to cycle to the beach. Also brilliantly comfortable bed. Visiting in early October meant a lot of local restaurants were closed, but this also meant everywhere was quiet and we practically had the local beaches to ourselves. Still great weather though, mid 20's so plenty of sunbathing and sea was lovely and warm. Fantastic deal for couples out of season so hurry up and book! |
