The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

Languedoc- Roussillon is still one of the most unspoilt regions of France with a spectacular coast line. There is a wealth of wildlife and areas of natural beauty with an abundance of wild flowers. The Canal du Midi, which is only a short walk from the house, is just the start of the conservation area. Watching the flamingos in flight is a rare treat. For the energetic you can walk or cycle along the Canal or simply watch the boats negotiating the lock. Cycling in Spring and Autumn is a delight along the Canal du Midi and a recommended guide is the Cicerone Cycling Guide based on the Canal du Midi and written by a resident of Portiragnes.
The black mountain area was well named. Running east to west. Its sharp northern face is covered by dark oak, pine and spruce forests. The east wind, full of Mediterranean moisture, becomes the "vent d'autan", a fierce hot, dry wind. This is a great place for bird-watching.
There are many historic towns well worth visiting:
Carcasonne, Pezanas, Montpellier, Aigues-Mortes, Pont du Gard, Avignon, Narbonne.
Beziers is L'Herault's 2nd largest town and only 10 mins away by car or local bus. Smart shops, a 12th century cathedral and many bars and restaurants. The Feria takes place during August.
Wine lovers will enjoy the degustations at the vineyards of St Chinian, Faugeres, Marseillan (Noilly Prat tour is excellent), Agde - the list is endless in this area of France.
Cap d'Agde is an elegant seaside resort with marina and sandy beaches. Plenty to do for children with a large water park "Aqualand" .
Pezenas is an old historic town with arts and crafts shops hiding amongst some stunning architechture. Try the local speciality of "Pate de Pezanas".
If you want to make an early morning start spend an interesting day in Barcelona or visit one of the many resorts along the Costa Brava.
The Portiragnes area
Portiragnes is still a very traditional French village built around its 12th century church which is visible from the house. There are plenty of typical French village shops for your daily supplies and if you choose to eat out there is a selection of restaurants.
Bull running through the village takes place in July and August and for the Fete du Vin in October.
Portiragnes music festival is in June and the Feria in July.
Walk or cycle along the Canal du Midi or simply watch the boats negotiating the lock at Portiragnes village. There are also lovely walks around the nature reserves situated near the beaches. Flamingos, nightingales, serins & turtle doves name but a few of the birds seen on our walks around the fields of the Canal du Midi.
During the season, dancing, concerts, exhibitions etc are arranged both at the beach and in the village.
All the usual beach activities are available - volley-ball, horse riding, mini golf, water slide, sailing schools.
It is certainly worth taking an early morning stroll along the beach to see the sunrise and buy fresh fish from the night catch.
The 18 hole course at Golf St Thomas, near Beziers is a challenge to all players. There are also golf courses at Cap d'Agde.

Guestbook for St Felix
Your house is beautiful with every comfort. It’s the first time I’ve ever stayed in a place where the bed was actually as comfortable as my own! A gorgeous place and so lovely to wake up every morning and see the sky lightening over the trees of the Canal du Midi. And as for Portiragnes – what a lovely little village, we felt so at home there, such a friendly place. We cycled along the canal to Beziers...pretty scenery and not at all strenuous. All in all a great holiday"
