The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

The Languedoc borders the Mediterranean sea with its spectacular coastline, the Pyrenees mountain range and the fabulous Camargue, famous for its beautiful white wild horses. Languedoc-Roussillon boasts up to 300 days of sunshine each year, with warm and sunny weather starting in March lasting into October. Summers are hot and temperatures frequently reach 30C plus in July and August.
Things to see include mountains, lakes, rivers, wildlife, ancient cities, market towns and cathedrals. World Heritage Sites in the area include Carcassonne - famous for its medieval walled city, the Canal du Midi - wonderful for long walks, cycling or boat trips, and the Pont du Gard - a three-tiered Roman aqueduct. The area is rich in history - Hannibal's March, Roman Occupation, the Crusades against the Cathars and the Treaty of the Pyrenees establishing the border with Spain - and there are lots of Roman and Spanish influences still evident today.
Montpellier, the capital of Languedoc-Roussillon, is a lively university town with botanical gardens, the largest pedestrianised square La Place de la Comédie, a 14th century cathedral and is a 45 minute drive away. For those wanting to take a trip to the vibrant city of Barcelona, it is easily reached by motorway.
The Portiragnes Plage area
50 minutes’ drive south of Montpellier between Béziers (11 miles) and Agde (11 miles), Portiragnes Plage has all the facilities you could wish for; horse riding, cycling (you can hire bikes), numerous restaurants and bars, shops, entertainment for children and a beach that, because the water is shallow for some distance out, is ideal for young families. There is a large market on Wednesdays well worth a visit.
The village of Portiragnes is just a few minutes away and with its old stone walls, 12th century Church, local vineyards and wine merchants, it is full of charm. The tree-lined Canal du Midi, a World Heritage site passes through providing many interesting walks and cycle rides.
Further afield there is even more to see. Béziers is 10 minutes away by car, on the way there is a large hypermarket and Béziers itself has great shopping with plenty of restaurants and pavement cafes. On Friday there is a flower market.
Ideal location for out of season holidays, although many places are closed, with car hire, there are many places to visit without the bustle of tourists. Enjoy the peaceful walks on the beach or in the village or just relax in the villa, put your feet up and enjoy the peace and quiet of the secure complex. Please note the swimming pool on the complex can be closed out of season, but for those who dare the fresh temperature of the mediterian sea, its but a short walk to the beach.
Agde (11 miles) is a beautiful fishing port with many excellent restaurants, traditional markets, and colourful houses.
Narbonne (28 miles) is well known for the Roman ruins and Gothic cathedral.
Sundays you will find Car boot sales all over the place and are great for picking up bargains

Villa was more spacious than we thought from the pictures! We are a family of 6 with children from 2 to 15 and they all loved it here. Sofa bed comfortable and enough space to leave it out as a bed. Pool not enormous but not too busy. Loved the resort for families. Beach was excellent and not at all crowded. It's a 10 minute walk but no traffic and flat! Teenagers enjoyed the 5 minute walk into the village area in the evenings where there was lots of free entertainment. So many places to visit from here too. Loved Agde and Pezenas and the Feria in Beziers. Only one very small point.... Where was the bread knife for all the lovely French baguettes??! Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay. Portiragnes Plage is a wonderful family holiday resort. In regards to the french Bread and bread knife, its more traditional to tear what you want but will note that the next time im there I will make a point of buying a bread knife for your next stay. |

Had a lovely time in Portiragnes Plage. The villa was very clean, tidy and well equipped. The complex was nice and the pool very good. It's barely a 10 minute walk to a great beach and the Canal Du Midi is stunning to walk along. Also only a short walk to the town of Portiragnes Plage itself where there's a number of places to eat. There was live music in the square and the mock bull fight was fun! We preferred sitting on the villa terrace and haviing a BBQ though! Had an enjoyable stay and would recommend.

Holiday stay August 2009
Arrival from Perpignan Airport was fairly straight forward and there was no problems accessing the villa. It was comfortable and clean, and had everything available, lots of gadgets for the kitchen.
The site was always clean, and the swimming area was lovely, very much needed as the temp was around 36 degrees.
Great location, as we were able to walk to everything, beach 10 mins, and lovely restaurants 10 mins in the other direction, you can get very reasonable meals out, always something going on round the square.
We had a lovely time and would certainly go back and would recommend.

Eddie,
We had a great time and thank you for the use of your villa. It was a great area for a family holiday with the pool and the nearby beach. We spent most evenings watching the world go by and one of the many bar/restaraunts in the village centre and during the day spent some great days out doing a variety of actvities like horse riding, canoeing and hiring bikes for the day. We would recommend the area and your villa as a great holiday destination.

August 2010
Portiragnes Plage ia a wonderful location for a family holiday. The villa was clean, tidy, well equiped and the complex was very secure. The kids loved the pool area. The complex and pool area was very clean and well kept. The days we werent at the pool were spent on the beautiful beach 7 minutes away. We loved the jam donuts sold on the beach. Great value for the size of them and was very convenient to send the kids to the sea to wash off all the sticky jam. BBQs in the evening washed down with a few glasses of wine were very welcomed after a day at the beach. Kids safely tucked up in bed later in the evening meant we had the evening in the patio relaxing with a bottle of wine. Very enjoyable and highly recommended. Will contact you again for next year. Great value.
Regards
Daniel
