The Cornwall region
To the north of St Austell China Clay has been mined for the last 250 years, though this is a relatively new industry compared to the mining of tin and silver. There is evidence to suggest that the old tin mines in St Austell bay were trading with the Phoenicians 2500 years ago. One of the most lucrative silver mines in England was at Appledore point, which is just to the left of Charlestown harbour. Never mind all the smuggling tunnels that exist, and the places where wreckers would lure boats onto the rocks by setting up false harbour lights. There is a vertical shaft at Charlestown beach in the cliffs and this is where kegs of smuggled brandy would be lifted up to avoid the excise men. Must have been great fun !!! The Eden project is in St Austell as are The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

"Fantastic house with great use of equipment"
Great location, several good beaches only 5-10 minutes drive, or there is one within a 15 min walk but beware the steep walk back up hill. Porthewan beach where the watersports are located is great wi… More

"Great place for a family or adult holiday"
Quiet location within a 5 minute drive to the beach or St Austell. Property was clean and well equipped . The owner, who lives adjacent to the property, is very helpful and accommodating, and made us feel very welcome. Although there is a wide range of watersports equipment available we did not use them. However, the availability of such items and the expertise of the owner are great assets for watersports enthusiasts.

"Very friendly, accommodating and welcoming."
We had an excellent week staying at 'Beyond the Break'. The accommodation had everything we needed. The location was ideal, close to St Austell. Also close distance to Charlestown Harbour which is very picturesque and a lovely place to walk to.
The owner was very accommodating particularly with us bringing our own boat as there was plenty of room to park it outside the bungalow.
Bedrooms were comfortable, kitchen well equipped and lounge very spacious with TV and freeview provided. I wouldn't say that it was luxurious, rather that it covered most needs and more particularly our needs for what was a very active week on our boat and in taking the Powerboat course. Would definitely recommend it to people interested in a boating holiday near the sea and in particular interested in RYA Powerboat Courses run by the owner. It ticked all our boxes anyway!
