The Cornwall region
The village of Porthallow was originally owned by the Trelowarren Estate and was sold into private ownership before the Second World War. The beach was, we understand purchased on behalf of the village in 1974 and consequently every village resident is entitled to berth a boat on the beach. Porthallow itself has a public house – The Five Pilchards Inn – beach café and general stores/post office.
The Helford River forms part of the unspoilt picturesque rural area of South Cornwall which runs along the beautiful rocky coastline from Falmouth Bay with secluded idyllic beaches around to the Lizard Peninsula which becomes progressively more rugged the further to the west you go, with dramatic cliff-top walks and stunning scenery available in what is a largely National Trust owned coastal area and is also designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This is a very much loved and very unspoiled part of south Cornwall, south of the exquisite and famous village of Helford and the renowned Helford River and Gillan harbour. Helford River and its creeks are of enormous interest to sailing enthusiasts with their world renowned sailing waters, ideal for both yachting, powerboats and dinghy sailing. Falmouth bay and the River Fal provide some of the finest day sailing waters anywhere in the United Kingdom and the property has an outlook over these.
The nearby villages of St Keverne and Manaccan offer a range of local amenities catering for most day-to-day needs including general stores, sub-post offices, churches, restaurants and other facilities. In addition, the market town of Helston, the major centre for the area, offers a much further range of facilities including supermarkets and secondary schooling.
From the Cornish meaning 'port at the end of the moor', Porthallow's history has always been inextricably linked with the sea. A former thriving Pilchard port, small fishing boats are still hauled onto the beach to this day. A number of buildings in the village also exhibit tell tale signs of the industry, if a little less obvious to the casual observer - The Association's Institute building is sighted over a former pilchard cellar!
Set in the heart of the small fishing village of Porthallow with the beach is just a few minutes' walk away. The South West Coast Path is just 50 metres from the studio, offering excellent coastal views across Falmouth Bay to St. Anthony's Head, and a beautiful walk to Gillan Creek and the Helford River. Porthallow beach is used by local fishermen, and it is possible to drive onto the beach to launch canoes and dinghies. The local pub, The Five Pilchards, offers a warm welcome to visitors and there is a craft shop with locally made pottery. The village shops in St Keverne, just a couple of miles away, offer comprehensive supplies. The local wildlife is abundant, with buzzards circling over the valley and seals occasionally visiting the bay. The Old Stable is in probably one of the most peaceful spots in Cornwall, and offers the opportunity for a truly relaxing holiday by the sea.

"Perfect New Year Getaway"
The Old Stable is a brilliant base for a couple looking to getaway and explore the Cornish coast. It is furnished really well and the use of space is amazing. Porthallow is a lovely place with a good pub, we missed a little shop though where we could walk to get the newspaper and fresh bread in the mornings! Loved that I could get no phone signal as was completely shut off and forced to relax. The only thing I would say is that if you want to cook in the cottage you are quite limited without any hob facility and watching Christmas films on the TV was interrupted by the poor signal. Overall fantastic stay, lovely cottage and location. Would thoroughly recommend.

"Lovely little cottage"
We really loved the old stables and will definitely stay again in future - the use of space in there is phenomenal.
So many lovely design features and creative elements. Really delightful seaside feel to the decor.
Particularly loved the lighting throughout - the tubing on the beams was great and really helps create a relaxed and laid back atmosphere.
The cottage was clean and tidy and everything was easy to find. Lovely setting as well.
It certainly provided the ideal space for our mini break.
I would say mind you head as the cottage is not built for the tall. At 5 foot 9 - I was definitely the maximum height for the shower!
I would highly recommend the cottage to anyone looking for a quiet bolt hole to escape to or a base to explore this wonderful area of Cornwall.

"Utilised the space to a good standard."
When we arrived in Porthallow we immediately loved the place, so quiet and peaceful. The Old Stable fitted what we wanted exactly, somewhere quiet and cosy. They have utilised the space well, using lots of inventive ideas to save space. We had a lovely time and will definitely go back.

"Beautifully designed studio in an idyllic location"
We really enjoyed our weekend stay at The Old Stables at the beginning of August. The studio had been cleaned to a good standard prior to our arrival and tea, coffee and fresh milk was provided which was a nice touch. The studio is very cleverly designed and located less than a minute's walk from the beautiful beach. The local pub is also close, which is very welcoming and sells lovely food - booking is recommended though as it does get very busy! It is a little of the beaten track which suited us fine as it was very peaceful and provided us with the perfect base to explore the local area. Highly recommended and we hope to visit again!
