Home description
The ‘Cabris’ is a traditional chalet located on the main street in the centre of the alpine village of Chatel, close to all amenities including banks, supermarkets, pharmacy, bars, restaurants and ski shops.
Chatel is a traditional farming village that has embraced skiing and mountain sports in general, but at the same time has retained its rustic charm. In the winter the chalets, farms and surrounding mountains are covered in snow making chatel the perfect place to stay and ski.
There are a wide range of shops selling traditional local produce, as well as super markets, banks, pharmacy and sport shops to hire or buy all of the mountain equipment you will need to make your summer or winter holiday just perfect.
Where as in the summer the village takes on a different persona with its spectacular scenery and beautiful floral displays. Making Chatel a great place to take the mountain air as you walk, ride or paraglide over the surrounding mountain and alpine meadows, or relax next to the lake.

Chatel is located on the French / Swiss Border in the mountains above the western end of Lake Leman (Geneva). Chatel offers both winter and summer mountain sports including skiing, snowboarding, walking, mountain biking, paragliding, white water rafting and much more. In the wider area there are medieval castles and villages and town to visit including Montreux with its famous Jazz festival, Evian, Lausanne, Geneva, Chamonix. Italy is only an hour or so's drive away.
In the summer there are a number of local fetes and each wednesday in the village there is the local farmers market.
Chatel area
WINTER Châtel was first established as a ski resort in 1947 with the installation of a single drag lift. From those humble beginnings the local ski area has now spread over a number of the surrounding mountains and is now served by a network of Gondola’s, chair lifts and drag lifts with a total of 130km of skiing covered by the local area lift pass.
For skiers who like to put some serious mileage under their skis Châtel does not disappoint. Being linked to the other French villages of La Chapelle d’Abondance, Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets, St Jean D’Aulp and the Swiss villages of Morgins, Torgon, Champoussin, Les Crosets and Champery. To form one combined ski area known as the Portes du Soleil giving a total of 650km of pisted skiing and limitless off piste, all covered by one ‘Portes Du Soleil’ Ski pass.
There are a number of fun parks and some great ski touring opportunities
SUMMER Mountain biking in the Portes du Soleil is a unique experience simply due to the shear size of the area and the variety of riding available. There is everything from cross country single track to full on down hills and bike parks. Whatever your bag there is something here for everyone!
To give you a helping hand there are a number of chairlifts open from the end of June until the beginning of September, don’t think that by using the chairlifts that you are cheating, what they offer is the opportunity to gain height before you start your ride allowing you to cover vast distances in a day.
Walking in the Alps is a fantastic experience, fresh mountain air, pine forests, crystal clear streams and lakes, alpine meadows, not to mention the magnificent views. Try the 2432m Cornette du Bise, the climb is on well defined mountain tracks and takes a few hours, however the effort is worth it for the views over Lake Leman to Lausanne on the far side, turn around and look across to Mont Blanc. Near the summit you are virtually guaranteed to see a few Bouquetin (see photo opposite).
Other walks include the mountain above Chatel known as the Morclan, or why not try the Mont Grange the mountain opposite Chatel which has been protected by being made into a national park. From Chatel you can also walk across the border into Switzerland.
