The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
The beautiful French Alps mountain range, close to the borders of Switzerland and Italy. The region is is known as Haute-Savoie which is the north-eastern part of the department Rhone-Alpes. La Grande Terche is approximately 1.5 hours from Geneva and 1 hour from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc.
With six natural parks, 28 nature reserves, some of the most prolific lakeside scenery in France and six thousand metres of ski runs all add up to make the Rhône Alpes one of the most diverse holiday environments in France.
Non skiers take heart, there are plenty of specialist touring itineraries to choose from - for a few days, to over a week.
Wine lovers will want to make for the Beaujolais route which takes in nearly all of the major Beaujolais wine producers in the Rhône - and you can take a detour to those that produce some of the crisp white Pouilly wines; the Bresse route for food lovers or the silk road around Lyon.
The Portes du Soleil ski area incorporating the resorts of Grande Terche, Morzine/Avoriaz, Les Gets and Chatel offers some of the best skiing in Europe, Chamonix draws the crowds in winter and summer, Annecy on the lake of the same name has been popular since Victorian times. Evian les Bains on Lake Léman is better known than its prettier neighbour Yvoire.
St Jean d'Aulps area
La Grande Terche is a small and increasingly popular holiday region. At an altitude of 1000m it sits overlooking the small town of St Jean d'Aulps which itself is about 5km west of Morzine / Avoriaz and 10km from Les Gets.
Neither La Grande Terche, nor the village of St Jean d'Aulps in the valley below, has any British "packaged" accommodation, a significant attraction for some. Instead, its surprisingly international clientele is dotted around in private chalets and apartments, and the resort is run by locals who are genuinely welcoming and friendly. Most of the apartment buildings are modern, but low-rise, and of traditional style. A number of genuine old Savoyard barns survive to add to the charm. Apres-ski is relaxed and friendly with some excellent bars and restaurants reasonably priced. The village regularly puts on events, including a weekly torchlight descent by the ski instructors and special celebrations at Christmas, New Year and Easter.
The village is a small, friendly community with 4 bars, 4 restaurants, ski hire shops, supermarket, a ski school and a launderette. Fresh bread and croissants are supplied via a depot de pain in the supermarket.
La Grande Terche is about as distant from industrialized skiing as you can get. Whether you are expert skier or intermediate, the 7km long circuit from La Grande Terche through Bellevaux takes you from forest to hamlet, and is both exhilarating and extremely beautiful. With the addition in 2007/8 of snow cannons from the winter, work has started to create the network of artificial snow at St Jean d'Aulps. A total of 7 snowcanons and 26 pole canons will be installed on the Grande Terche slope and nursery slopes, to allow Skiing back to the village.
The Village is linked by free bus to Morzine/Les Gets and is a shortdrive by car to the Ardent Gondala accessing the whole Portes du Soleil ski area, one of the best in the world!
With its fresh air, warm sun, natural beauty and a multitude of sports and activities, the French Alps are perfect for everyone to enjoy a summer break whether your on your bike, walking or driving.
The Portes du Soleil area has 20 ski lifts open in the summer, leaving from the various resorts. These take out a lot of the effort of mountain-biking, giving you the time to admire the scenery and get your breath back: 380km of paths between France and Switzerland are accessible via the ski lifts.
For those of you who want to enjoy some less energetic activities there are some beautiful traditional French and Swiss villages around Lac Laman (lake Geneva) with many local delights for you to sample, alternatively you could head into Geneva for some serious shopping

Guestbook
Hi Paul, Just to let you know we had a great week in La Grande Terche. The weather was perfect - cold, but sunny all week with enough snow not to worry about bare patches. The apartment was great and well positioned for both local and Portes du Soleil skiing. Other clients may wish to know about journey times - having taken an overnight stop in Troyes en route down, we did the return in a single day - La Grande Terche to Nottingham in 15 hours (750 miles) including the channel crossing.
Many thanks. Take care.
Gordon *************************************** Paul, Just a quick note to say thanks once again for the use of your ski apartment. We all had a fantastic time - it was the first time skiing for all three girls and La Grande Terche was the perfect introduction. It was off season so they almost got one on one tuition, and the girls working in the ski school/garderie were brilliant with the kids.
Kristine and I also had great time - not the biggest ski area in the world, but it was enough for us to get away from the kids for a few hours. I'm sure that we will go back. And the apartment was perfect ... and lovely and warm. We couldn't get the tv to work (I don't know if it was just us), but to be honest it was nice to get away from the tv as well.
All the best, Graeme **************************************** Paul & Nina We had a super week in Grande Terche in January, with plenty of snow. The apartment was fantastic with ample hot water for baths etc and spot less on our arrival. We did find that it was a bit icy on the road up so had to park lower down a few days but not a problem The new LCD TV and Sky was great to entertain the Kids this year.
Thanks Viv & Andrew **********************************************
