Les Dunes
About the home
Ideally located just 150m from extensive dunes and a beautiful sandy beach on a very quiet street. Low tide reveals rock pools, mussel and oyster beds ideal for exploring. Fantastic walks along the wide sandy beach or through the dunes. Perfect for a beach holiday or as a base from which to explore the green countryside and numerous interesting places in the area.
The dunes are a protected area (although no restricted access) and are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Several types of wild orchid can be found. Frogs and crickets can be heard in abundance on a still summers night. The lack of light pollution makes the dunes an ideal place to gaze at the night sky and shooting stars are commonly seen during the summer and autumn.
Lindbergh Plage is approximately 4 km from Portbail, the nearest town, with it's historic churches, harbour and famous market square. Fresh local produce can be found all year round. Portbail has a strong fishing community and is proud of it's local oysters and mussels. A supermarket is available in addition to local shops. At low tide Portbail can be reached by walking through the dunes and across a very narrow footbridge which is normally covered by the sea at high tide!
Fresh bread and food basics are also found at Denneville, situated due south of lindbergh, and can be reached by walking through the dunes or along the beach (approx 10 mins away) Nothing beats an early morning stroll, beach-combing the tide line and then returning for breakfast with a fresh baguette.
The house is located approximately 35 mins drive from the D Day landing beaches (Omaha and Utah) with their many interesting museums and moving memorials. German bunkers and American fox holes can still be found in the local countryside and forests and if you look closely you will see war materiel being used as everyday items in the most unlikely places.
Simply put, Les Dunes is the ideal location for a real holiday by the sea!

The Normandy / Manche region
Famed for it's beautiful coastline and internal maze of countryside lanes (Bocage), Normandy is a French centre of dairy production. It's butter is famous around the world as is it's Cider and Calvados. Springtime sees an abundance of apple blossom and orchards are everywhere.
Geographically situated opposite the Channel Islands. Day trips to Jersey can be made by boat from Carteret harbour (10 min drive from Lindbergh) which are highly recommended.
Normandy will be forever known as the site of the allied D Day landings and subsequent liberation of Europe during WW2. A visit to Omaha and Utah landing beaches is facinating and guided tours are available. A trip to the war graves cemetary at Colleville is a powerfully emotive experience. The famous museum to airborne troops at St Mere-Eglise should not be missed.
Other attractions include (far too many to list - so here is a taster);
•Chateau de Pirou
•Cerisy forest
•German bunkers and tunnels at Cherbourg
•Cap de la Hague lighthouse
•Granville Aquarium
•Coutances Cathedral
•City de la mer (submaries, aquarium etc) Cherbourg
The Portbail / Lindbergh Plage area
Portbail is a quaint market town with fishing harbour and historic church. There are several simple restaurants serving quality local produce. Market day is the busiest day of the week where organic vegetables and locally caught fish can be found. Fresh, local mussels and lobster feature highly.
There are several horse riding schools and rental stables in the immediate vicinity. Donkey treks can be arranged (highly reccommended) lasting half a day ,with a picnic stop, you can follow a coastal path or a chemin vert (green lane) through the local countryside.
Lindbergh Plage is ideal for kite surfing and buggy riding. There is a land sail club which runs courses and taster sessions 5km away.
Course fishing lakes are available at day rates in the area. Beach fishing is available on the doorstep! Boat fishing trips with local fisherman may be arranged (subject to season and weather)
There is a Sailing Club in Portbail which runs courses throughout the summer. River kayaks can be hired for guided tours (6km away)

Karen met us when we arrived and had the house ready early. Really nice lady who speaks good English. We had a tour of the house and received a Welcome Pack which was useful. The house was well appointed with everything we needed. it was clean and had really comfortable beds and we slept well. It had a good TV with English terrestrial channels. The house was light and airy and was situated in a quiet road near to the beach and the neighbours were lovely too. The garden was large and suitable for small children with swings and a barbecue. There is a bar at the other end of the road where you can get food and they speak english. Port Bail nearby has some nice restaurants, the Pizzeria (Fenix) was good (English spoken) La Repere over the bridge did the best fish and chips ever. On Sunday's you can get cooked rotisserie chickens from a van on the square by the Church. Other good restaurants are the Bar Carteret and Cafe Marine in Carteret. Don't bother with the ruins at Pirou, a waste of time. Go to Coutances for shopping, some nice shops and cafes etc. Check on parking at the Tourist Office, you get a card for the dashboard and find out about parking restrictions. You're ok on the square until 2 p.m. but after that you need the blue clock card for the dash. Nice beach at Denneville. Nice area for a beach holiday but not many large towns nearby except Countances. Very enjoyable stay nontheless. |
