The Mallorca/Majorca region

Portals Nous is a neighborhood in the municipality of Calvià on the island of Majorca, part of the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. It includes the residential neighborhood of Bendinat, and it is adjacent to El Toro to the west, La Porrassa the east, Son Ferrer north, and the sea to the south. It had its start in the 1930s,[1] and now has a population of approximately 2,650 residents.[2]

The town is a meeting place for businessmen, celebrities, high society figures and members of the Spanish royal family during their Summer stays in the Marivent Palace.[3][4] The American singer, Dina Moore Bowden, lived here.[5]

Festivals are celebrated from 12 to 15 August. The marina is called Puerto Portals.

Portals Vells is located in the town of Calvià, 10 minutes by car from Palma in the direction of Son Ferrer, past Poniente golf course. The stretch of road is quite old, but the dense Mediterranean pine trees make it a pleasant route with natural tunnels which seem to caress the roadside.

The story of these beaches begins in the Middle Ages, with the extraction of solid rocks for the construction of Palma Cathedral, which means that today we find a huge cave with three entrances that look like gigantic portals (which is where Portals Vells, lit. 'Old Portals', gets its name).

In total there are four coves in Portals Vells. The Cala del Mago, the two Calas de Portals Vells and the Cala de La Cantera (where the rocks for Palma Cathedral, La Seu, were cut). Around these four coves there is a beach bar and three restaurants, which are only open during the summer season. There is also a beach bed and sunshade service and a sports port.

The beaches and coves of Portals Vells are also known for being pioneers of nudism in Mallorca, along with Es Trenc beach in Campos. One of the most famous beaches is Playa del Mago, which gets its name from a film produced in 1967 with Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn and Candice Bergen.

HISTORICAL ROUTES

1 CHRISTIAN ROUTE Distance: 1.64 km Estimated time required: 20 min Difficulty: Easy

2 MUSLIM ROUTE Distance: 2.36 km Estimated time required: 45 min Difficulty: Easy

3 BATTLE ROUTE Distance: 4.31 km Estimated time required: 1 h Difficulty: Easy

Description: These are three historic routes that commemorate the landing and conquest of Mallorca by King James I of Aragón in 1229. The routes feature monuments such as the cross commemorating the landing, the mountain of El Puig de Sa Morisca and La Capilla de la Piedra Sagrada (the Chapel of the Sacred Stone), among others. The main attraction of this itinerary is the archaeological park of Puig de Sa Morisca, where there is a high number of archaeological finds both from the Talaiotic and Islamic periods, as well as a great deal of ethnological elements derived from the exploitation of the forests of the area: casas de roter (small stone feudal farmers' huts), lime kilns, charcoal kilns, etc. The park also offers some incredible panoramic views of the province of Calvià, stretching from the coast to the mountains of Puig de Galatzó and La Mola de S'Esclop, as well as an impressive natural heritage including plant species such as Phoenician juniper (Juniperus phoenicea), jointfir (Ephedra fragilis), bufera or Withania frutescens, and wild olive (olea europaea).

DRY-STONE ROUTE: ES CAPDELLÀ – ESTELLENCS

Start: Es Capdellà, carrer de Galatzó (128 m)

Finish: Estellencs, carrer d'Eusebi Estada (155 m)

Distance: 22.85 km

Estimated time required: 6 h

Difficulty: medium/high

Heritage sites on the route: The town of Es Capdellà, the public country estate of Galatzó, the ethnographic site of Es Tramuntanal, the grain store at Galatzó, the houses of Galatzó, the Sa Cometa spring, the lime kilns of Na Llaneres, the lime kilns of Comellar de Sa Cova Rotja, the ethnographic site linked to the charcoal industry of Ses Sínies, the Ses Sínies well, the naviform structure at Ses Sínies, the spring-fed water tank Sa Font des Poll, the charcoal kilns of Ses Volvetes, the mountain refuge of Sa Coma d'en Vidal, the estate of Son Fortuny, the town of Estellencs

Description: This variation on the dry-stone route GR221 links the towns of Es Capdellà (Calvià) and Estellencs (Estellencs), crossing the public country estates of Galatzó (Calvià), La Coma d'en Vidal and Son Fortuny (Estellencs). Along the route the mountain range of Sierra de Tramuntana offers a wide range of scenery, alternating between farmland, reedbeds, verdant holm oaks and steep mountains, including the impressive Puig de Galatzó (1027 m) and La Mola de S'Esclop (926 m). Meanwhile, we can discover a varied ethnological and historical heritage, including a large number of constructions linked to agriculture and the exploitation of the woodland such as lime kilns, charcoal kilns and charcoal workers' huts, barracas de roter (small stone feudal farmers' huts) and so on, as well as other historical elements such as a granary used for storing the tithes and the "naviform" or boat-shaped dwelling of Ses Sínies, a Bronze-Age archaeological site.
