Welcome to our little house on the corner - sitting in one of the loveliest, most unspoiled corners of the Alentejo region, on the corner of a tiny hamlet, belonging to another time, right in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede National Park. The house has uninterrupted views of the vast skies, undulating hills and charming cork-tree fields that fill the region.

Recently built, designed and constructed along traditional lines, you'll find a charming, whitewashed home with simple blue accents around doors and windows - typical of the region. Inside is clean and elegant with lots of local stone used. There's a full kitchen, dining table for 6 and lounge area. Two double bedrooms. and the large leather sofa in the reception room converts to a comfortable double, accommodating 2 more guests. There's one bathroom with a walk-in shower. A wood burning stove keeps the house toasty in the winter months - the shutters and thick walls keep you cool in the long, sun-soaked summer months.

The house is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens with exotic cacti, palms and fauna, as well as a wonderful array of flowers. Lemon, Orange, Tangerine, Pomegranate and Fig trees dot the gardens. The surrounding countryside is a haven for birds of prey and makes for a great spot for bird watching.

We have a beautiful pool, set amid the gardens - In the heat of the Spring, Summer and Autumn months it's a blissful haven!

Though the house is on the edge of the village, it does have neighbours, including the owner's house which shares the plot. However, the house is a summer property for the owner, and guests have exclusive use when renting. Most of the villagers are farming families, so animals - dogs and goats - can be heard at times.

The Alentejo region

This particular corner of the Alentejo region has, thankfully, stayed largely off the tourist map. As a result, it feels untouched by time in many ways, with a traditional way of life preserved. The surroundings are largely farming land, where the principle crops are cork, vines and the famed Porco Preto (Black-foot pigs) that feed on the ancient Oak tree's acorns. This meat really is unlike any other and, to our mind, the finest pork in the world. It's found in many of the local restaurants, as are a delicious array of regional specialities.

Vineyards dot the landscape and many open their doors to wine-lovers for tastings - there are too many regional wines to mention but suffice to say they are mainly superb and staggeringly affordable!

Near to the house are some prehistoric caves, complete with ancient cave paintings, which you usually have all to yourself! There are almost endless walks available, right from the front door, taking you across undulating fields, through shady cork-tree groves, dipping in one of the natural pools that dot the landscape, should you feel like it.

The area is a magnet for birdwatchers, with numerous birds of prey regularly spotted.

The nearest town in Arronches (15min drive) with it's pretty square, two small supermarkets and various cafes and restaurants - all shopping essentials can be found here.

A little further afield are some wonderfully preserved towns such as the fortress town of Estremoz, with it's open air market each weekend and great little eateries tucked along its narrow lanes. Evora is a must visit too, for it's intricately stone laid boulevards, markets and shopping. Monforte is stunning too.

Just another 15 min drive takes you over the border to Spain and day trips to various Spanish towns. Much closer, just across the border is a lovely natural swimming spot on the river Gevora.

This is an ideal spot for lazy holidays, enjoying the sun, the countryside, the quiet and the wonderful (and very reasonably priced) food and drink.

"Two beautiful houses, with fantastic facilities in a gorgeous region of Portugal - cannot recommend enough!"

My partner and I stayed here with out 2 year old son, and a group of friends with their families. There was 10 of us staying there and we didn't feel cramped. The pool is perfect for all ages, and we felt very comfortable letting the young children play around the poolside as even the pool's 'deep' end, isn't too deep.

The two houses are brilliantly kitted out with tasteful furniture from the region but with modern kitchens and bathroom facilites. The area is off the beaten track, but not too far from towns should you need to get provisions, want to have day trips out, even or want to eat in local restaurants (although the houses are so beautiful is was hear to tear ourselves away). The local food is exceptional, and there are many restaurants to choose from, only a short drive away.

Ideal for couples wanting to just 'get away from it all' or for families to enjoy, as it's a very safe place to let the children run free - infact, we often took the children out for walks to explore the area.

We all had a very relaxing stay and I cannot recommend it highly enough. We'll definitely be revisiting it soon!
