The Cornwall region

Cornwall--- What to see and do:

* Rugged coastline and granite moors

* Beautiful sandy beaches

* Picturesque fishing villages

* Dozens of visitor attractions e.g Eden Project, National Maritime Museum, Subtropical Gardens

* A land of legends

Cornwall's long rugged peninsula is almost cut off from the rest of England by the River Tamar. The striking coastal scenery includes Land's End and Lizard Point, the most westerly and southerly places in England. Inland, granite moors give way to sheltered valleys, havens for more luxuriant vegetation. Traditional occupations have been farming, fishing and metal mining and today tourism supplies seasonal income. The countryside is steeped in legends, such as those of the Celtic saints and King Arthur.

Port Pendennis

Falmouth lies at the entrance to Carrick Roads,one of the great waterways and the third largest deep water natural harbour in the world. Sir Walter Raleigh first saw the potential for a port and Henry V111 realised its strategic importance building two castles on the headlands at the harbour entrance. Later the port became the base for the famous Falmouth Packet ships which carried mail and passengers to and from the Colonys.

Falmouth is renowned in the seafaring world with numerous sailing events starting and finishing here most recently Dame Ellen Macarthur and the 2008 Tall Ships. Falmouth hosts the Henri Lloyd sailing week and is hometo the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. Harbourside events include the River Fal Festival and the Oyster Festival. Local pleasure craft can be taken to the River Fal, the city of Truro and the Helford River visiting Frenchmans Creek made famous by Daphne Du Maurier. Local ferries can be caught to the village of Flushing and the harbour side town of St Mawes.

7-15 August Falmouth Week

14-17 October Oyster Festival

Boat hire, sailing lessons, fishing trips wild life safaris and golf are all readily available. Falmouth is home to the National Maritime Museum which can be seen from the apartment. There are three local beaches in Falmouth, all south facing and extremely safe.

"Wonderful holiday in England for two Americans!"

My husband and I stayed for two weeks at Challenger's Quay. We flew over from America and the stay was worth every minute of the flight to get there. David and Wendy Plummer were so helpful to us in provide us with anything we needed, as well as information on where to exchange currency, etc. The pictures do not do justice to the views from the apartment. We had wonderful views from the kitchen, the living room, and the bedrooms. We enjoyed many beautiful sunsets from the comfort of our living room. We loved the area and the people so much, we would like to retire here.
