Home description
Having 2 separate bedrooms this apartment is ideal for families who after a day on the beach or exploring the Pyrenees would like to tuck the kids up in bed and chill out with a glass of local wine on the balcony or curl up in front of the television to watch a video from the library. With only a 2 minute walk to the beach and a 5 minute walk to the busy port area this apartment is close to all amenities. An ideal holiday home for anyone who enjoys the beach or watersports. The area is famed for its watersports facilities and hosts the Mondial du Vent in the spring which attracts people from all over the world to compete. There are many places of interest to explore nearby including vinyards, mountain and seaside villages as well as the medieval walled city of Carcasonne. In the summer season Port Leucate is one of the regions main resorts for activity and events. During August Leucate organises historical reconstruction of jousting and other modern and traditional activities. The Port houses many high quality reasonably priced restaurants along with the usual bars and shops selling everything from beachwear to souvenirs. The commercial area has well stocked supermarkets, a wonderful selection of shops selling fresh produce from the daily baguette to freshly caught local oysters and mussels. A plentiful supply of local wine is also available from the many caves (wineshops). There is a market selling local produce on a regular basis throughout the year. The blue flag fine sandy beach is good for families with lifeguards on duty throughout high season. Port Leucate beach is vast and even during high season there is loads of room for everyone. Nearby there are more blue flag beaches including Leucate plage, La Franqui, and for those fond of nature and sand yachting there is the beach Coussoules. There is also a secluded naturist beach nearby for those in favour of an all over tan. All these beaches have had blue flag status for the past 4 years. Activities available are swimming, sailing schools, windsurfing schools, scuba diving, water skiing, fun fair with go karting and quad biking. Cycle hire is available, sea fishing, boat and sailing trips are also readily available in the port area. Nearby are horse riding, golf and tennis. There is a "kids station" which offers a wide range of activities to children and teenagers such as swimming pools, sports, painting and shows.
On average the area receives 300 days of sunshine a year. During the summer the temperature is usually around 30 degrees with very little rain, the weather stays pleasant until late October early November. The snow arrives in the mountains around December and the good weather is usually back by April. The area has its own version of the Mistral the wind that blows across Provence and the Cote d' Azure, in this area its called the Tromatane and in the summer months brings welcome relief from the heat. The combination of a very pleasent climate, its environment and facilities makes Port Leucate an ideal base for whatever type of holiday you enjoy.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
Port Leucate is located on the Golfe du Lion and is home to one of the largest Marinas on the French Mediterranean coast the other being nearby Barcares. It is part of the national park project. Barcares also has a superb beach, again blue flag and 5 miles long. It is home to the Lydia a 300 ft long steamer built in 1931 and deliberately run aground in 1967. It has been converted into a casino and disco and is extremely popular even having its own Miss Lydia elected every 2 weeks during the summer. The old village of Leucate lies just a mile away from the beach and is dominated by the ruins or the fortified castle built in 1036. This stands on a promontory from which there is a magnificent view of Les Corbieres, the Salses lake and Mont Canigou. Cap Leucate is a landmark for both seafarers and migrating birds it is a popular area for hikers and mountain bikers. Nearby La Franqui is the Audes oldest seaside resort and has various sailing competitions throughout the season. La Plage des Coussoules offers wild beaches and sand yachting. The area around Port Leucate is renowned for its seafood, particularly oysters, celebrated with a week long festival in March. Wine production is as important as fishing in the area which is France's largest wine producing region. Autumn being an essential season for the peninsula during which time you can taste a wide range of local wines such as Corbiere, Fitou, Muscat de Riversaltes and Minervois. The region is fantastic for Skiing. It is still used mainly by French people therefore tends to be quieter and less expensive than the Alps. The resorts are well managed and all have snow machines for low snow days, all have a good range of runs for skiiers of all levels. In summer the ski resorts turn into a hikers paradise with exceptional views with some of the resorts operating their ski lifts during the summer to transport hikers to higher levels. The region was made for walking having hundreds of miles of pathways all are well maintained and clearly marked. They pass through areas of extreme natural beauty and local interest.
