Port Elizabeth/Nelson Mandela Bay area
Known for its sunshine and safe sandy beaches, Port Elizabeth is a major seaport and tourist destination set along the beautiful shores of Algoa Bay, and is fondly referred to as South Africa’s friendly Eco-City or just the Friendly City.
Some of PE's greatest treasures are its clean beaches and warm water, and boasts the honour of having the fourth best climate in the world for a coastal city. An agreeable climate here sees temperatures range between 18ºC to 20ºC in summer and 8ºC to 20ºC in winter. With sea temperatures as warm as 21ºC and rarely colder than 14ºC in winter – Nelson Mandela Bay is an internationally-acclaimed holiday, water sports and triathlon centre.
Leisure facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay including swimming beaches, art galleries, museums, the Bayworld oceanarium and the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex. There are also yacht clubs, golf clubs, diving and riding schools, restaurants for various tastes, township tours and shopping centres round off the tourist experience.
Just 73kms from the city is the exclusive, private Shamwari Game Reserve, which is home to the ‘big five’ of safari animals. Early morning and evening game drives are available. There is also the Addo Elephant Park close-by, dedicated to the preservation of the Eastern Cape Elephant and the Cape Buffalo. The city is also situated 260kms from Knysna and Plettenberg Bay – two quaint seaside towns along the glorious east coast.
Appointed the 2010 host city for the World Cup, Nelson Mandela Bay boasts architectural profiles of Victorian, art deco and modern buildings, which reflect a changing history - reshaping its profile to fit the mould of a world-class tourist destination while meeting the service needs of its citizens. PE has many historical attractions, one the most interesting being the Historic Donkin Heritage trail, which allows the visitor to follow in the footsteps of the 1820 Settlers on their journey of discovery and settlement. This 5km trail visits 47 historical sites and architectural delights in the Old Hill area of central PE.
Accessibility is a key factor with the city reached by excellent national roads and the revamped Port Elizabeth Airport – now the fourth largest airport in the Airports Company South Africa domestic network.
How to get there
Port Elizabeth can be easily reached from either of the two main International Airports (Cape Town/ Johannesburg) by a number of low-cost carriers such as Kulula.com, 1Time, Mango as well as South African Airways. Port Elizabeth is just over an hour away from both cities by plane, or approximately 10 hours by car. A number of car companies provide rental services at reasonable rates.
