The Queensland / Far North region
Far North Queensland is the only location on the planet with dual World Heritage Areas - the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest of Earth. It is rich in natural history and beauty as well as indiginous history.
Captain James Cook sailed past in 1770, hitting the reef at Cape Tribulation (about 40 kms north) and pulling into the Endeavour River (now known as Cooktown) to affect repairs before heading home to England. There are many relics of this bygone era as well as cultural heritage of the local indiginous population.
High Season (May - November) is dry and warm and Summer (December - April) are wet and very warm. The region has a year round climate and no "closed" season.
Cairns / Port Douglas area
There are many tour companies that specialise in day tours to the reef, the rainforest and the tablelands. You can choose from snorkeling, diving, sailing, fishing, caneoing and many other water-based activities.
The rainforest and tablelenads offer a vast array of activities from bush-walking, cycling, 4WD tours, indigenous / cultural events and many wildlife attractions e.g. croc-spotting, birds, butterfles, reptile park, etc.
Market day in Port Douglas is Sunday and not to be missed. Similarly, Kuranda markets are world famous and open most days of the week.
Shopping, arts and craft gallaries, pubs, clubs and restaurants are part and parcel of life in FNQ.

Further details indoors: Rainforest Estate encompasses a spacious 6,500 square foot (700 square metre) home, originally built in the halcyon “awakening” days of Port Douglas when the internationally famous Sheraton Mirage Resort was being built.
It reflects the grand style of Far North Queensland accommodation, with a totally updated 21st century design and decor. It hosted many parties and events during the transformation of Port Douglas from a sleepy fishing village to the international five-star destination it is today. If only the palm trees could talk.
Rainforest Estate comfortably accommodates up to 8 people (up to 14 by special arrangement) with plenty of room and privacy for everyone. In addition to the many options for indoor and outdoor entertainment and relaxation, it's also a great base for exploring all the natural wonder and excitement of Far North Queensland.
Highlights include:
- two king bedroom suites, one queen suite and one twin suite, all with separate en suite bathrooms and private balconies
- extensive indoor and outdoor entertainment and living areas for formal and informal dining and entertaining
- fully equipped central gourmet kitchen with island bench and granite benchtops
- separate full wet bar with wine cabinets and drinks fridge
- spectacular indoor waterfall that spans both levels of the home and falls into a large reflection pond
- large tropical lagoon-style swimming pool (solar-heated and cooled for comfortable year round swimming) with its own poolside BBQ pavilion
- Bose Lifestyle 50 (four zone) home entertainment system incorporating a surround sound home theatre with a 42” plasma screen
- video distribution system that allows all free-to-air, satellite, VCR and DVD channels to be operated from and viewed on any of the 8 plasma and LCD TVs throughout the home (including the gymnasium)
- home automation, monitored security and automated access gates with intercom
- library / office with wireless broadband, copier, fax, printer

- by special arrangement, a separate pavilion that includes two more king bedroom suites with private en suite bathrooms (taking total sleeping capacity to 14), a second kitchen and a fully equipped office
The home is fully air-conditioned throughout with separately controlled, split cooling systems in every room. Most rooms have louvre windows and ceiling fans. All are fully screened and enclosed to ensure year-round comfort. This includes the gymnasium.
The home can be opened on all sides, allowing in tropical breezes and the sounds of the rainforest. You can have the best of both worlds – open, airy tropical daytime living, and comfortable, secure nights for deep and peaceful sleep.
Extensive elevated timber boardwalks provide access to the separate pavilions via an ornamental rainforest creek and tropical gardens
There is also a huge hangar-style garage (as well as the carport adjoining the main building), providing ample undercover storage for cars, boats, caravans, etc.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
There are four bedrooms suites in the main residence for a total sleeping capacity of up to 8 people (up to 14 by special arrangement with the use of the separate pavilion).
All bedroom suites are carpeted with free-flowing muslin curtains or blinds for total privacy. Each has a private en suite bathroom and direct access to private balconies or courtyards offering fantastic rainforest and garden access and views. Most bedroom suites also all have LCD TVs with satellite, VCR and DVD facilities.
One en suite bathroom has a large spa-bath (as well as a walk-in shower) and another has a double walk-in shower. One is wheelchair accessible, One has a bidet. Three have dual vanity basins, cabinets and mirrors. All have private rainforest or garden views.
Meal Preparation Areas
The fully equipped gourmet kitchen, right in the middle of all the action, can handle the demands of the most lavish dining experiences.
European appliances, plenty of bench space and a fantastic central location will please everyone from the casual cook to the executive chef. Being right in the middle of the main entertaining area, along with the large wet bar, the “executive chef” will never feel “away from the action”, in fact will be the centre of attention.
There's an excellent range of kitchen appliances, high-quality utensils and table settings and plenty of room to help make meal preparation a highlight of your stay.
And as you’d expect, there’s also a great BBQ area (including sink) alongside the pool for preparing a quick snack or a gourmet meal.
There’s even a wood-fired oven on the creek-side timber deck to whip up a gourmet pizza or a full roast dinner. This is also great for those cool nights (yes, it does drop below 20 Celsius, 70 Fahrenheit on the odd occasion) if you wish to sit around an open fire.
Dining (for up to 24, seated at 3 x 8 square dining tables) can be indoors beside the waterfall in air-conditioned comfort or outdoors on the pool-side patio or the huge creek-side “under-the-stars” timber deck. But if you don't wish to cook, there's also plenty of restaurants nearby for that special night out, or we can organise an in-house chef to prepare that special meal.
Entertainment and Living Areas
As you enter the home through large glass double doors you are drawn to the 14 foot (4.5 metre) high indoor waterfall falling into expansive reflection ponds on two levels. Within this “atrium” area you can enjoy a meal, read a newspaper or magazine, play games, listen to the extensive music library or simply sit and chill out.
There's plenty of music CDs, games and challenging jigsaw puzzles available on-site for your enjoyment.
The atrium opens onto a large (50 foot / 16 metres long) covered timber verandah that overlooks the ornamental creek, tropical gardens, extensive lawns and outdoor hot tub pavilion. This verandah leads onto the huge creek-side “under-the-stars” timber deck complete with wood fired oven. A great (tropically cool) place for breakfast, lunch or a late afternoon cocktail before dinner. Also great on balmy summer nights for a tropical outdoor dinner party.
The atrium also leads (in the other direction) to the central kitchen / bar, which in turn opens via full width bi-fold doors onto the large ( 65 foot / 20 metre long) pool-side patio, BBQ pavilion and pool deck. It faces south-east and welcomes the warm morning sun and tropical sea-breezes filtered through palm trees surrounding the huge resort style pool.
The patio and pool deck are great for working on that suntan or for a cool, relaxing place to take a refreshing afternoon swim, read a book, take a “nanny” nap, throw a wild cocktail party, enjoy a casual barbecue or prepare and enjoy a candle light (or flare light) gourmet meal by the flickering water.
Upstairs, the formal lounge includes a Bose Lifestyle 50 audio system complete with a surround-sound home theatre and a 42” plasma screen TV. Quality lounge suites, in a fully air-conditioned and carpeted environment, with extensive views overlooking the pool, rainforest, gardens and lawns, provides yet another option for private relaxation or group entertainment. There’s also a comfortable library / office for catching up on email, surfing the web, reading, sitting or napping.
Apart from the home theatre, other Bose audio zones include the Atrium, the pool-side patio (which includes the kitchen and bar) and the rear verandah, deck and hot tub pavilion. Each can play a separate source (e.g. TV, CD, DVD, PC, MP, radio or tape) to provide individual “sound zones” or the same source throughout all zones (13 speakers in all) for a total concert hall experience, indoors and outdoors, all controlled by an LCD touch screen remote control.
There's a great library of Australian and New Zealand music, films and literature for your enjoyment. Extend your knowledge of Down Under and it’s varied music, history and culture, including those of the Australian Aborigines and New Zealand Maoris. Or just experience some of our sports, humour and relaxed lifestyle. There’s something for everyone in the library.
Using the remote controlled home automation system, you can also control mood lighting to set any ambiance from a wild disco party to a private romantic evening from anywhere on the property, even while washing down a bottle of champers in the outdoor hot tub.
Access to the property is controlled through security gates and an intercom system and is also protected by a monitored alarm system for your complete security. There is also a concealed in-floor safe for the secure storage of cash, jewellery and other valuables.
Further details outdoors: Rainforest Estate's abundant, tropical grounds are near the end of a road in a pristine rainforest valley with only a handful of large, out of sight, acreage properties nearby. It's away from suburbia, passing traffic and other unwanted intrusions, yet close to all the action that Far North Queensland offers. Tropical birds, butterflies and Australian native wildlife are in abundance from dawn to dusk and after dark.
The expansive home is surrounded by acres of sweeping lawns, tropical gardens and exotic fruit and rainforest trees.
Gardens range from mature tropical fruit trees and natives to newly planted exotics. Recent plantings include tens of thousands of native trees, shrubs and exotic plants to provide shade, attraction, aromas, wildlife habitat, colour and tropical snacks. The birdlife and butterflies are abundant all year round.
There's also plenty of room for outdoor activities such as an early morning stroll or power walk, an afternoon game of boulles, kicking a football around or even a little chipping or putting practice for the keen golfers.
A permanent rainforest creek runs along the southern boundary for over 300 feet (100 metres). A walking track follows the creek to steps that provide easy entry into a cool swimming hole fed by the mountain stream. A large bamboo stand under a canopy of rainforest on a bend in the creek is an ideal place to take a dip, read a book, watch and listen to nature, think creatively or just relax.
The year-round flowing mountain creek even contains freshwater fish and crustaceans for keen fishermen. Another track leads higher, through lush, wet tropics rainforest to the upper areas of the grounds. There are large level pads with extensive mountain vistas, ideal for resting, reading and reflecting.
For the energetic and adventurous, there are walking tracks to high rainforest creeks and spectacular waterfalls. The land rises over 400 feet (120 metres) within the property boundaries and then another 300 feet (90 metres) or more through a World Heritage, wet tropics national park bordering the northern boundary.
There are also many nearby walking tracks. But take care not to venture too far, especially alone. This is remote, unspoiled and untouched wet tropics rainforest at its best.
Prefer to fly to and from the property ? Your own helicopter pad provides easy access to Cairns International Airport and all local attractions.
The large shed provides plenty of undercover storage for parking cars, boats, trailers and caravans.
