About this location
The Argyll and Bute region
If you love wonderful scenery - then you just have to visit, us here, in the Scottish Highlands!
You can literally get a feeling for the real Scotland by walking out the front door of the cottage!
Bothan Darach is well situated for visiting any of the exciting days out that are possible from Port Appin. Oban is under 20 miles and Fort William is around 40 minutes. On the way to visit practically any site you will pass castles and scenery which are iconic.
Port Appin is situated in a fantastic position with views north over Loch Linnhe to the mountains of Kingairloch & Ardgour. From Bothan Darach we are only a mile to Castle Stalker and in the other direction about the same distance to The Isle of Lismore. The famous Glencoe is 30 minutes away. Ben Nevis (just over 30 miles from the cottage) is always a popular climb for those with the energy! The Ice Factor at Kinlochleven is 25 miles away and is a truly different experience!
There is just so much to do in this area walking; cycling; bird watching; wildlife to be spotted; mountaineering; kayaking; sailing; horse riding; sea safari; farm shops; tea rooms & superb restaurants. Locally you can arrange to purchase direct from the beef farmer some excellent meat or the free range pork produced in Appin might appeal. Local venison is available in our local community co-op shop in the village. (As is local beef too)

"Spacious and comfortable, located in an idyllic village setting."
Port Appin is one of those places where people say "where?". It is off the beaten track and doesn't get much through traffic, but is surrounded by beautiful land and seascapes. There ar… More

"Great Weekend Break"
This is a lage, spacious cottage in the tiny village of Port Appin. The best thing about it was the space - 2 living rooms, 4 bedrooms and lots of bathrooms and a large private garden.
The kitchen is well equipped & the owner kindly left a hamper of food.
There are lovely views from the upstairs rooms & lots to entertain the kids - DVD's, books, games and good internet connection for somewhere so remote- there was a great log fire in living room which was roaring very night.
The house is walking distance to the local grocery shop and The Pierhouse Hotel, which has a great pub and restaurant. There are really beautiful walks from the house & a trip to Lismore Island - you can also rent bikes nearby & fish.
All in all a great place to spend a long weekend in September if you need a refreshing break, some exercise with a bit of sea air.

Dennis and Katie were there to welcome us to their cottage with a hamper full of goodies and a fridge stocked with the basics for our week long stay.
Everything you could possible want or need is available to use and the cottage was definitely a home from home.
Unfortunately the weather was not on our side during our stay but the central heating and open fire kept us nice and snug when we returned from our walks drenched and tired.
The upstairs lounge has a fantastic view and was very comfortable, as was the main lounge and the all the beds.
We didn't get to use the two decked areas in the large garden - due to the weather - but I should imagine they are an excellent place to chill out of an evening or even dine on.
On the whole the cottage is an wonderful base to come back to when you have been out walking or site seeing. It is ideally situated for east access to Oban, Fort William and umpteen other places to visit.

"Beautiful Location, Lovely House, Great Service"
Stayed here in July 2010 (and in 2009). Kate and Dennis are fantastic hosts and really make you feel welcome and are very attentive to you needs. The house is very close to the sea and the upstairs sitting room is great to relax in and watch the world (and the yachts) go by. The house is well stocked with everything you could want from the utensils in the kitchen to the games and books in the sitting room. There is wireless broadband so I could bring along my laptop and use it to scout out places to see and restaurants to eat at.
Port Appin is a good central location to get around the west coast. Glen Coe is up the road and places like Inverary and Loch Ness are within a few hours. Port Appin itself is right next to the island of Lismore which is a wonderfully serene island. There is a place in Port Appin you can hire bikes and take them across on the little ferry for a bike ride. There are also a couple of nice restaurants on the way down to the Ferry though one is quite pricey.
I can't recommend this house, and the couple who run it, enough. Having sailed off the west coast in this area as well it really is a beautiful spot and sitting upstairs watching the sun go down and seeing the nearby lighthouse winking as night falls is quite a sight.

"great views and location only sorry when we had to leave!"
we have stayed at this property 3 times now and are booked to visit again! the owners are so lovely and helpful nothing is too much trouble for them. They provide a lovely welcome basket which really is full of luxuries - many properties we have been to before you were lucky to get a tea bag and some milk!
such a lovely home from home and with some many accessories - its puts your own home to shame for being well equipped!
