Home description
The house is in Vel’ká Lomnica, a village situated between Poprad and Kezmarok. Poprad is one of the main tourist centres in the High Tatras. Velka Lomnica is only 10 minutes drive from Poprad; in the evening you can choose to eat in one of Velka Lomnica’a restaurants (all within walking distance of the house), cook for yourself or visit one of Poprad’s many restaurants. (There are about 15 to choose from in the town centre!).
The attractions of the High Tatras National Park, the Slovak Paradise and Liptovská Mara, among many, many, others, are the real reason why people come to Slovakia. When you see the snow-capped Tatras towering above the stillness of Liptovská Mara, and highlighted against a blue and cloudless spring sky, you will wonder why it has taken you so long to discover Slovakia.

The East Slovakia / High Tatra Mountains region
Poprad is the third largest town in eastern Slovakia, and is a typical example of the Slovk town with a pedestrianised town centre full of interesting shops, bars, restaurants and market stalls. Kežmarok, one of the most picturesque towns in the area, is well worth a visit . There are two sights of national historical importance here - The Lyceum, which has one of the largest historical school libraries in central Europe and the modern articular church dating from the 18th century. You can also visit The Paulinius Church, Kezmarok Castle, The Old Market and the town fortifications. In the summer the European folk and craft festival is held in Kezmarok, and in the winter a Christmas market takes place. Kezmarok offers plenty of summer and winter sports activities. Levoca is one of the most beautiful towns in Slovakia and has plenty in the way of history and culture to keep the tourists happy. The town was founded on the site of an earlier Slavic settlement in the first half of the 13th century, but the history goes back to the 11th century. Today we can admire the wonderful facades of Renaissance borough houses on the square, Gothic yards and passages, an alley of infamy from the 16th century, eerie fortifications and bastions and the parish Church of St Jacob, which is dominated by a stunning altar created by Master Pavol of Levoca. Stary Smokovec is the oldest tourist area in the High Tatras. It is situated in the southern slope of the Slavkovský Peak. The town was originally settled around mineral springs, which tourists still enjoy today. Stary Smokovec offers visitors a range of opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Visitors also have the opportunity to ski and many hikes to the central part of the High Tatras start from here. Stary Smokovec is now the administrative centre of the High Tatras, the home of the Mountain Rescue Service, travel agencies and ski rental services. It is important junction of the Tatra Railway, linking the most frequented mountain valleys. Strbske Pleso is the highest town in the High Tatras (1350 m above sea level), and the character of this area is created by a lake which is the second largest on the Slovak side of the High Tatras. A range of European and world skiing events are held here, including ski-jumping and cross-country events. Strbske Pleso was founded as a centre of tourism and later new aquatherapy facilities, recreation facilities and a top class complex were built. The town has an excellent transportation infrastructure, including a Tatra Railway link to Poprad. It is a starting point for many attractive excursions and trips in the mountains. Throughout the year the town has a busy cultural life and it is a well-known skiing centre. Gerlachov village is situated in the middle of the High Tatras mountain ridge under the Tatras' highest peak (2655 m), called after the village, the Gerlachovský peak. The first written reference to the village, which was built by gold diggers called Gerlach, dates from 1326. The fresh mountain air and beauty of the local environment will convince visitors that they made the right decision to visit Gerlach. There are woodland walks in the summer, or cross-country skiing and cycling in the winter. You can go horse-riding, visit a sauna or fitness centre, play tennis, use the thermal swimming pools, explore caves, visit museums and other relics of the Spiš towns. The oldest building is a tower of a Roman-Catholic church from the 13th century. A traditional tournament the "Memorial to 24 Killed Heroes" (they were buried at the local cemetery) is organised in the village every year. Tatranska Lomnica is the largest of all Tatra settlements founded in 1892. It is a major centre of tourist activity offering ski slopes in nearby Skalnate Pleso, good transportation connections, aerial bobsleighs, quad-bikes, and some wonderful scenery - especially in the winter. Visitors can enjoy their spare time in casinos, fitness centres, swimming poolsor by hiking one of the many trails.
Poprad / Velka Lomnica area
This area of Slovakia is covered with castles that demand exploration. The most important of these is arguably Spissky Hrad set on a hilltop near Levoca, which is open to tourists willing to make the climb up the hill!! Kezmarof offers a "tourist trail" which includes churches from the middle ages, the castle, town hall and other architectural gems. The High Tatras are full of hiking trails from the basic to the very demanding; they are all rewarding and well sign-posted. Further afield Liptovska Mara is a picture of serenity against a backdrop of the Tatras and a clear blue sky.
How to get there
Car - If you travel by a car, simply head to Poprad and then towards Kezmarok. Velka Lomnica is half way between the two towns. Although car hire in Slovakia is cheap compared to most of Europe, check that you have full insurance.
Plane - If you arrive in Poprad by air you could hire a car and have the opportunity to travel around the immediate area. • You can fly to Poprad from London Stansted (Luton after 29 October 2007) . Fights to and from Slovakia are currently on Wednesday and Saturday. You can also fly to Kosice from Luton (from 29 October 2007) Vienna, Prague and Bratislava and then hire a car. • Another option is to fly to Bratislava, hire a car there, and drive up to Vel'ka Lomnica. The journey is 333 kilometres to Poprad, but this only takes four hours, via Zilina. Alternatively, you could take the scenic route and take a detour via Banska Stiavnica, or Banska Bystrica; this may take you six hours but the scenery is well worth the effort, and you will avoid the motorway. You can fly to Bratislava every day; flights are usually a little cheaper than flying to Poprad, especially if you book well in advance. • If you want to fly from Heathrow or Gatwick then you can use Vienna as the landing point in Europe. There is an excellent coach service from Vienna airport to Bratislava, which takes just under one hour. Your car hire firm will be happy to meet you at Bratislava bus station. The advantage of flying to Vienna is one of choice - there are over a dozen flights in and out each day. Prices are also reasonable if you buy over the Internet, and do not mind taking an early flight
Train - You can travel to Poprad by train and then hire a car or use public transport to get to Vel'ka Lomnica. There are about eight trains a day from Bratislava; the journey time depends on the train you catch, but typically it will take around five hours.
