The Sandbanks chain ferry, 15 minutes' walk away, shuttles between Sandbanks and Studland Bay at the mouth of Poole Harbour and there are also ferries to nearby Brownsea Island Nature Reserve, owned and managed by the National Trust.

Poole itself boasts the second largest natural harbour in the world, a haven for wild sea birds and a mecca for watersports enthusiasts. Poole is a vibrant town with a bustling quay, a good variety of shops and restaurants and the much acclaimed Poole Lighthouse Arts Centre. Bournemouth town centre is also a short car journey away or walkable from Sandbanks (2.8 miles) along the sea front
