The West Country / Dorset region
Poole harbour is the largest natural harbour in Europe. Poole has held the highly coveted international blue flags for the past 19 years. This indicates the beaches have consistently met high standards of management and cleanliness. Poole has 6 sandy beaches; Sandbanks, Shore Road, Flag Head Chime, Canford Cliffs, Branksome Chime and Branksome Deane Chime, all adjacent to each other along the southern shoreline. Wardens regularly patrol the seafront throughout the year.
Sandbanks beach is naturally beautiful with its golden sands and is designated by the EC as one of the few areas in the country which has achieved the highest standard of cleanliness.
Poole / Poole Quay area
From Llama trekking to kite surfing, from ten pin bowling to the worlds most stunning motor cruisers, there are no excuses for boredom in Poole (www.pooletourism.com).
Poole has 41 miles of cycle network and the various routes cater for all ages and abilities of cyclists. 25 miles of the network are away from traffic. The Poole cycle map is available on www.boroughofpoole.com
Brownsea Island, a National Trust property, can be accessed via regular pleasure boat from Poole Quay, where you can also find boats to neighbouring Swanage, Wantage, Bournemouth and Sandbanks.
Also from Poole Port, regular ferries operate to Jersey, Guernsey and France. Day trips are available.
Beaulieu in the heart of the New Forest is just over 20 miles east of Poole off J2 of the M27.
Annual events on the Quay include:
Summer Breeze on the Quay every Thursday, May to July (music, street entertainment & fireworks, great family fun) Beach Party every Thursday, August on the Shore Road beach (family fun, live music & BBQ with fireworks) Dream Machines every Tuesday, April to September (biggest and best motorcycle event in the UK) Red Hot Fridays, May to August (sports and classic cars)
How to get there
As you drive towards Poole Quay along Old Orchard, turn right at High Street traffic lights then turn immediately left at the Hogs Head Pub. You will see the Poole Quay Visitors car park on your left. At the end of the road, turn right and you will now be in Strand Street. Port St James car park with electric gates is on the left hand bend.
