BookThe West Country / Dorset region
Dorset has a World Heritage Coastline - The Jurassic Coast is beautiful and great for walkers and fossil hunters with stunning views from Poole across the Purbeck hills towards Lyme Regis and West Bay. Dorset towns offer stunning architecture, excellent shopping opportunities and plenty of cafes and restaurants. A stroll though one of our historic towns brings to life our rich heritage, from relics of Roman times to the countryside of Thomas Hardy.
Places to visit - Explore West Dorset's many Iron Age fortresses to Roman amphitheatres or visit one of West Dorset's largest attractions, the imposing 180ft Cerne Giant!
Visit a TV or film location - West Dorset has been the backdrop for many television and film productions, providing great choice of sweeping landscapes, inspiring seascapes, large country houses and small rustic cottages, bustling towns and picturesque villages.
Dorset is ideal for a self catering holiday as it is close to London and the South-East and has more sunshine and less rain than Devon or Cornwall.
Walking and Beach holiday -The sea is always close and there are sandy beaches at Bournemouth, Poole, Sandbanks, Studland, Swanage, Weymouth and Lyme Regis, plus many shingle beaches. Snorkelling and diving are available off ledges and rocky coves. On the South-West Coast Path you can walk on unspoiled coastline from Poole to Lyme Regis; inland there are 3000 miles of footpaths where you can walk in beautiful countryside.
The Poole / Poole Quay area
Poole has a bustling Quay, the best beaches in England and Poole Harbour, Europe’s largest natural harbour, makes Poole a natural first choice for a trip to the South Coast. Poole also has miles of golden sandy beaches with clean, clear waters.
Poole Quay - relax in one of the many restaurants and bars and watch the visiting yachts in the marina and Poole harbour beyond. Or have a drink in one of Poole’s old pubs like The Portsmouth Hoy, The Poole Arms The Quay, The Jolly Sailor and Lord Nelson.
Poole's stunning Quayside offers vibrant bars, historic pubs and restaurants, ice-cream parlour, fish and chips, shopping, museums, and fashion. Stop at the Old Customs House where you can enjoy a morning coffee and croissant with a stunning view.

Do the Cockle Trail and discover how the town has changed over hundreds of years, including tales from the smugglers and sailors to the ghosts and ghouls who have inhabited the town.
The Quay offers fabulous views across Poole Harbour where you can go on one of the many harbour cruise boats available to take a closer look, or set sail for the National Trust’s Brownsea Island with its peaceful wooded walks and wide variety of wildlife. Boats leave regularly from the quayside to various destinations such as Brownsea Island, Wareham River and Old Harry Rocks. Poole Quay is also home the RNLI Lifeboat Station.
Just a short walk from Poole Quay is Poole Park, fun and excitement for all the family. It has often been said that all of the best places in Bournemouth are actually in Poole, and I think that is even more true now than it was 30 years ago, when I left the area. Part of the reason is surely the vibrancy around Poole Quay, with its multitude of real ale pubs and eating places, and 5 Angel Mews is fantastically well located, within walking distance not only of the Quay, but all parts of the town centre. The house itself is tastefully furnished and well equipped, with everything that might conceivably be needed for a holiday of any length. The kitchen especially is clean and relatively spacious, with a large fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, and plenty of cupboard space. Some people might feel that the lounge diner is a bit of a squeeze for eating, but by moving the table marginally we could comfortably seat 6 adults. The master en-suite bedroom is on the top floor and is very comfortable, with more than adequate drawer and cupboard space for a holiday. The other two bedrooms are somewhat smaller, but equally comfortable. Having three double beds is a limiting factor for families (Our family group consisted of two couples and our two adult sons), however a high quality Z bed is available, and the owner was happy for us to use this in the lounge. If we had one criticism it was that the house was cold on arrival, as the central heating had gone off by then (around 10 pm) and it took us a while to work out how to switch it back on and adjust the thermostat etc. It was a particularly cold spell and of course it would have been quite difficult for the owner to prepare for this. Perhaps some clear instructions could have been left on the kitchen table however, to avoid us having to dig out the reference book and operating manual? (In fairness it would have been asking quite a lot for the owner to have remembered we were arriving late in the evening – with hindsight perhaps we should have mentioned this again shortly beforehand, given the weather forecast). At other times the house was comfortably warm, despite the freezing temperatures outside. Whilst there is plenty to do and see, within walking distance of the house, obviously to fully explore the surrounding area a car is ideal, and we were able to park our large MPV (with roof box) under the allocated car-port, which is behind the electric gate. All in all we loved the house and consider it a perfect base for anyone holidaying in Poole. We think it offers value for money and were particularly impressed that the owner offers flexibility in length of stay – we were there for 5 nights over Easter. We look forward to staying at 5 Angel Mews again in the future. |

We stayed as a 5-member family group for one night. The email correspondence with the owner beforehand was efficient and friendly. All our needs were catered for. The house itself is pristine and... more |
