About this location

The Dorset region

Dorset's beautiful and dramatic scenery has long made the county a favourite with writers, poets and film crews. Jurassic cliffs plunge alongside picturesque harbour towns and coastal resorts, providing an impressive backdrop for the many popular Dorset holiday destinations. Blue Chip Holidays can offer Dorset holiday cottages in many of the county's towns, each of which has a slightly different experience to offer than the next. Poole has one of the world's largest natural harbours. Portland Castle was built in 1539 by Henry VIII to defend Weymouth. Tours of Thomas Hardy's Dorset are operated throughout the county

Poole, on Dorset's south coast, is famous for its large harbour and bustles with life and the many residents and visitors attracted to the town all year round. Since the Poole and Sandbanks holidays of thousands are centred around the towns' beaches, quay and harbour – it's little wonder the resorts are home to all kinds of water and beach-based sports, not to mention many events. Whether those staying in Blue Chip Holiday's Poole holiday cottages are looking for excitement, relaxation or culture they are sure to find it. Poole Harbour is the 2nd largest natural harbour in the world (1st is Sydney). The Lord of the Rings author J. R. R. Tolkien lived in Poole for during his retirement. Two out of the five previous British winners of the Miss World title have hailed from Poole
