The great advantage of Riverside is that you can walk everywhere no need to take the car as the village centre is within 400 meters so you can enjoy a meal and a drink without worrying about driving! Yet you are in a tranquil spot. It is a very spacious house with river views from each and every room and has a light & airy 'seaside' feel. Riverside boasts 2 large king size double bedrooms, one with an ensuite WC, and a seperate alcove bedroom with bunk beds. The sleeping arrangement is flexible and so for groups of individuals travelling together or for families with children its great. There is a fully fitted kitchen and dining room plus a separate spacious lounge with an open fireplace.
Outside the cottage has a private elevated sunny terrace which offers georgeous views to the marina, estuary and village beyond. The kayak centre is opposite the cottage and they offer courses and excursions to all age groups. During the warmer months there are weekly boat trips to visit the islands from the marina. If you like to walk or cycle there are marked routes for all levels and abilities. For fishing in the river you can buy your fishing permit from the harbour master for the day or longer.

BookThe Brittany / Cotes-D'Armor region
It has been said that this part of Northern Brittany is one of France's best kept secrets and it certainly has a lot to offer in terms of culture and history. Its beaches and coastline are unspoit.
The medieval village of Pontrieux is in the Cotes D'Armor region of Northern Brittany and straddles the river Trieux. Pontrieux is famous for its 50+ lavoirs which can be visited by electrically powered boats and is a village with protected status by French National Heritage.
The Pontrieux area
It has won awards nationally for its flower displays and has the prestigious classification as a 'Petit Cité de Caracter'. It also has one of the oldest running steam trains in this area and clients can take a days excursions up and over the valleys to Paimpol - a great day for all the family.
Pontrieux has a good variety of small shops, art galleries, pavement cafés and restaurants, a super wine merchant with a lovely boutique and really everything you need within easy walking distance of your house!
There is a weekly market, lots of local festivals and expositions and many places to visit locally. Why not start by visiting 'Le Chateau de la Roche Jagu' a wonderful castle dominating the estuary and its super gardens - 2 mins drive from the cottage.
The cathedral in Treguier, La Place du Centre in Guingamp are great places to visit locally and within 15 minutes. Sandy beaches, small fishing ports and some spectacular coastline and walks are within 15 minutes away. Try Paimpol, Treveneuc and St Quai de Portrieux for seafood.
Within 30 minutes you can visit the Tregomeur zoo, the theme park Amoripark, the island of Brehat, Ploumanach and Perros Gueric part of the Granite Rose coastline.

We stayed in Riverside cottage for a week in May and used it as a base to explore Brittany by motorcycles. There's good parking immediately opposite and a great view across the river. The cottage really had everything we needed, including a small barbecue that was well used. The elevated terrace to the side of the cottage was a nice touch too. Pontrieaux is a picturesque town with has two boulangeries, a few restaurants, a pub and a good sized supermarket, all within walking distance of the cottage. Mauro and Alison were lovely hosts and always responded quickly to emails. |

A pleasant stay within walking distance of village shops and amenities. The cottage is bright and comfortably furnished and made a great base for exploring the area. Wi-Fi only available at the pub across the river - not far but not always convenient. We did not use the terrace as it is up very steep and potentially dangerous steps and the weather wasn't really suitable for relaxing outside. Response: The beautifully kept public gardens to the front of Riverside Cottage provide a great alternative to the raised terrace area, especially for our more elderly guests. However, if you do feel able to take the steep steps up to the private terrace, the views across to the estuary and beyond are well worth it! |

My wife and I were looking for a relaxing week in Brittany, in a gite within walking distance of a small town, but also with the benefit of surrounding countryside, and not too far from the seaside. A big ask? Well, we found it all in “Riverside Cottage” in Pontrieux. The owners, Mauro and Alison, who live a few minutes away, were friendly, helpful and accommodating right from the very first email contact, through to them waving us goodbye as we drove off at 6.30 am at the end of our week's holiday. The cottage is located on the bank of the River Trieux, about 400 metres from the town of Pontrieux. It has been recently renovated and is clean and freshly decorated. We didn't expect 5 star luxury hotel standards, nor did we get it. But that's no criticism of Mauro and Alison's cottage, because it is let as a gite and that's exactly what it is, but it was certainly one of the best gites we've ever stayed in. The two king-size beds were very comfortable, with nice firm mattresses. The two settees in the lounge were not particularly comfortable, but then we didn't spend too much time there. There's a small TV with Sky Freeview channels, and you can play your own mp3 music files via a USB slot on the TV. There's a really nice decking terraced area next to the cottage, although the steps to get to it are a little daunting. Our only disappointment about the cottage was the absence of wardrobes, and hence no hanging space for clothes. By far the best bit for us was the grass area on the riverbank right outside the cottage. We spent many hours sitting, relaxing and dining there (take your own comfortable folding chairs if you've room), and you can even pick up free WiFi from the pub and the restaurant across the river. There are a number of yachts and pleasure craft berthed in the river, and this adds to the charm with a seaside harbour feel. Pontrieux is a lovely small town, full of flowers when we were there in early September. There's a fantastic chateau only a 5 minute drive away, which is a must-see. Wear sturdy shoes because, as well as the chateau interior, there are wonderful gardens and walks down to the estuary. There's also a restaurant in the grounds. We had a wonderful week at Riverside Cottage and would like to extend our thanks to Mauro and Alison for making it available to us. Mike & Denise Bradshaw |
