Pontorson

Around each corner there is beautiful and varied architecture, ancient and historic, dappled with friendly bars, restaurants and shops. Lovely walks beside the river Couesnon which is the historic split between Brittany and Normandy.

Pontorson is named after Monsieur Orson, a Norman Chief, who had the bridge (Pont meaning bridge) built across the river in 1031 under the command of Robert The Devil, William the Conqueror’s father. The bridge allowed the Norman troops to get back into Normandy after their battles in neighbouring Brittany.

The church L’église Notre-Dame was the wish of William Conqueror, it was built by the fellow who built Mont Saint-Michel. With Roman and Gothic transition through twelfth and fifteenth centuries, its porch flanked by two Romanesque towers it is said that it was given to the town in 1158 by the King Henry II.

Pontorson is set along the banks of the River Couesnon leading to Le Mont Saint Michel. Once having a fortified Chateau where Bertrand du Guesclin 'The Black Dog of Brittany' based himself, also known as the ‘Captaine of Pontorson’, he had such a history of attacks against the Channel Isles and English Invasions!

"Staying Here was a Highlight of the Trip!"

My wife and I were fortunate to grab this apartment at the last minute and it was a highlight of our nine-week trip. Comfortable, convenient to groceries, bakeries, restaurants and the train station without a car, it was headquarters for day trips to Mont St. Michel by bus and D-Day beaches by train. Delightful taste of small-town living and Alison couldn't have been more helpful. And now they have Internet!

"Fantastic"

My wife, myself and a friend stayed here at the beginning of May and really
enjoyed it. The cottage was well equipped and central to Pontorson, with shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. We recommend you try Le Grillon for a meal,. the menu is extensive and varied and good quality. It is best to book as it is very popular. A couple of times we couldn't get in! If you have a car there are many places to visit within easy reach. Bayeux is well worth a visit, and we were pleasantly surprised to find easy and free parking. The d day landing beaches are also in easy reach, as is St., Malo, Cancale, and Dinan, which has a lovely walk on the ramparts of the castle, but if you have walking difficulties don't try it. Very steep! We visited Mont Saint Michel but found it very busy and again very steep steps, we thought it was better viewed from a distance! The weekly market in Pontorson on a Wednesday is worth a look. Lots of fresh produce and we saw the most people in Pontorson that day, otherwise it was very quiet. We would definitely recommend this cottage and are thinking of returning at some point. Many thank Tony. We loved it!

"Delightful gite on Pontorson market square"

We found this gite purely through a web search for places around Mt St Michel (about 5ks) and Pontorson happens to be twinned with our home town. It turned out to be the perfect choice for us.From our… More
