History comes alive at the world famous Céide Fields near Ballycastle in North Mayo, at The Foxford Woollen Mills, Hennigan's Heritage Farm and the new National Museum of Ireland's Museum of Country Life, which opened in Autumn 2001 just outside Castlebar, the county town. Sporting opportunities abound, especially fishing of all sorts including the River Moy in Ballina where the salmon is king. There are watersports, hiking and walking, golf links and courses, horse riding and cycling… the list is endless. Sandy beaches, clear waters and beautiful islands. Superb restaurants, pubs of character and of course the irresistible tumbling melodies of traditional Irish music spilling onto the streets. Quite simply Mayo is amazing!
About this location
The Western Ireland region
Foxford is synonymous with fishing, with the world famous River Moy and an abundance of other rivers and lakes. Lake fishing can also be enjoyed on the Lough Cullen and the Lough Conn. Foxford is recognized worldwide as a brand of quality for blankets and rugs. The Foxford Woollen Mills are still in production today and going strong - so definitely worth a visit.
This nicely decorated country retreat is a mile from Pontoon, a renowned angling centre, close to Lough Conn and Lough Cullen and midway (12 miles) between Ballina and Castlebar towns. This spacious house on a secluded one acre site is tastefully furnished, has a welcoming open fire and fully equipped fitted kitchen. A section of the Foxford Way walking trail leads to the house from the main Pontoon to Ballina Road. This area has great lakes ideal for fishing and has some of the finest mountain scenery in the country.
Pontoon is a renowned angling centre in the idyllic lake district of northeast Mayo, between Lough Cuillin and Lough Conn. Lough Cuillin has a number of sheltered beaches with the most popular one at Drummin Wood. There are several forest and lakeshore walks in the Pontoon region.
