The Brittany / Morbihan region

This area of Brittany is steeped in historical and beautiful sites, such as, the castle city of Pontivy (18Km), the medieval chateau town of Josselin, Nantes to Brest canal, and Quenecan Forest. Most cities, towns and ports are medieval in origin, fascinating to visit with quaint and imposing buildings, Cathedrals and churches. The capital of Morbihan is Vannes with a port, shops, restaurants and weekly market. Quimper and Quimperle boast wonderful Cathedrals and a Museum. Fishing ports of Concarneau and Auray have hidden charms and many restaurants specialising in all local dishes, including seafood and crepes. Pont Aven, where Gaugin originated from, is close to the coast and an artistic centre. L'Orient home of the East India Company is nowadays more modern, with casino, nightclubs exhibitions, world touring artists and a superb music festival throughout the city in July. Equally interesting are chateaux some specialising in beautiful seasonal gardens ~ particularly the chateau at Treverez, Rosenbo, Rochefore en Terre and Roch Jagu.

Other places worth visiting include, maritime museums at Brest and St Malo, the Zoo at Pont Scorff, artisan street markets each day of the week and annual fetes.

Pontivy / Silfiac area

Silfiac is well known for its numerous walks and woodland paths, which all start from the village centre. The walks follow the historic paths of the Kings of Brittany and circle the lake of Pont Samuel. The village is a ten minute stroll away. The village has a boulangerie and bar, which also provides an adequate assortment of everyday groceries and dairy products. The village also has a bar/tabac, that shows all the live sporting events. You can also buy your fishing permit here. A mobile fishmonger parks in the square every Saturday morning. Three towns, each with a supermarket, are within a ten minute drive; Gourect to the north, Cleguerec to the east, and Guemene~sur~scorff to the south. Eating out in the local restaurants is always delicious and great value. Typical Breton lunches start at €9.50 for four courses some with free wine. Gourmet cusine starts at €15 per person and good quality wines in the supermarket can be bought from €2 to €5

The local area offers weekly evening street markets and festivals. In May the music festival at Clegeurec, Tour of Classic Cars, Cavalcade at Guemene~sur~Scorff, July 14th many, many celebrations take place all capped off at the end of the day with wonderful firework displats. The Fete d'Andouille is in Guemene sur Scorff in August with street displays and Breton dancing. In early August, there is the spectacular "Son et Lumiere" at historic "Abbaye Bon Repos" which lies in the forests surrounding the beautiful canal of Nantes to Brest.

Guestbook

"We would like to say that we had a lovely stay in Berleze. The cottage and area were everything we hoped it would be, the weather certainly was kind to us and made our stay all the more enjoyable... Thank you once again for the stay at your lovely cottage it is a credit to you and we will be in touch again, I am sure"
Cheryl & Ian M, Penn, Buckinghamshire.

"We had a lovely relaxing holiday, helped not least by the location of the gite tucked away in the peace and quiet of the Breton Countryside. We certainly would have no hesitation returning to you in the future and credit you on a beautifully kept gite and well presented private garden"
Linda and Alan F ~ Co. Durham

"We had a lovely week in Silfiac. The perfect peace was just wonderful and Silfiac was a welcoming little village. Description of holiday places can be deceiving but Berleze was what we had imagined and hoped for. It is in a great position for visiting other towns and villages but we were also more than happy just to sit in the garden and 'chill' with a glass of wine (or two)"
Chris and Mary S ~ Torquay
