The Barlavento Islands region
Sal Island earns its Portuguese name meaning Salt and was once home to the world's largest salt mine at Pedra de Lume. It is well known for unspoilt beaches, the lovely sea and year-round sunshine, making it perfect for sun-seekers. It is a prime location for fishing and scuba-diving, boasting a varied of sea life. It has become a top destination for water sports with some of the beaches offering perfect conditions for surfing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing.
Take time to tour the Island and visit:-
Santa Maria Town
Pedra de Lume (salt mine) Visitors can float Dead Sea-style in the highly saline water and enjoy a mineral rich mud bath.
The port of Palmeira
The real capital Espargos
Buracona (literally a large hole), a natural tidal swimming pool. The Blue Eye is definitely worth a visit and its beauty has to be seen to be believed. It is found among some volcanic rock formations, and is popular with divers who access it from a tunnel.
Whale watching and turtle preservation where you can adopt and name a turtle and receive a certificate.

The Tortuga Beach Resort is near Ponta Preta beach is a haven for sun worshipers with its crystal clear waters and pillow-soft white sands.
Cape Verde climate is pleasantly tropical with year round average temperatures between 26 and 30 C, but do not be fooled by the slight breeze which whilst really welcoming, can mask the suns intense rays, so make sure you take some strong sun cream. Incidentally, talking of "masks" the friendly locals have some incredible hand carved wooden masks and ornaments and it is worth going into Santa Maria town to look at the various carvings and jewellery items they have for sale in shops and mini markets.
There are plenty of lovely restaurants and bars, including Hotel Odjo d'Agua, Morabeza Beach Club, Ocean Bar and many others enjoy live music in some of the bars which is a key attraction.
There are no large crowds on Sal Island, only quiet towns and a few hotels, and is an ideal destination for anyone seeking peace and quiet. In the main town of Santa Maria you can hire Jeeps, quad bikes and bicycles. The motto displayed on T-shirts and signs around the Island make perfect sense: 'No stress, Cabo Verde', and this is Cape Verde: 'No stress'. None at all!

"If you want a quiet, quirky vacation, go to Sal and stay at Bunita Amilia."
This is a vacation rental located on a resort in Santa Maria. For us, this was the best of both worlds: We enjoyed access to the facilities of the resort--the private beach and beach chairs/umbrella… More
We appreciate feedback as this means we can ensure we maintain our apartment to the best of its capacity, and provide excellence to our guests and ensure others enjoy their stay and have a great holiday.
The beds are equipped and provided mostly throughout the apartments on the resort, and we are looking into the towels that were provided and we will sort this out.
We really want people to enjoy their stay and have a wonderful time, and we appreciate those who can give us reviews to allow this to continue to happen.

"Superb Apartment In A Perfect Haven"
We booked this apartment before it had any reviews and I suspect that the next time we want to visit here, it will be a lot harder to get a booking, as it's just superb and racking up the good reviews rapidly.
The apartment itself was large, airy, immaculately clean and very well equipped including air conditioning (in the bedroom as well). The bed was comfortable, the furniture substantial and comfortable and the bathrooms well appointed. The veranda was large, with plenty of space for a table and chairs and still lots of room to spare - the whole place had a sense of space and luxury. The apartment is situated at the top end of the resort, with easy access to the bar, coffee/outdoor seating area and breakfast restaurant. There is evening entertainment in the outdoor area and if you leave the patio doors open, you can hear it slightly, but all noise stops at 10.30 p.m. so it's an ideal blend of being somewhere where there's entertainment and somewhere you're not disturbed by any noise when you want to sleep. The apartment is on the corner of the building, meaning there are very few shared walls, so it's incredibly peaceful and it offers a high degree of privacy.
The Tortuga resort, in which the apartment sits, is super. There are a couple of pools, restaurants if you can't be bothered to move far and the beach at the end of the resort. This beach isn't an ideal swimming beach, as it's on the west coast and quite choppy, but it's perfect for sunbathing (lots of loungers and umbrellas for shade) and the main beach in Santa Maria (golden sand and never crowded) is there is you want to swim in the sea. The staff at the resort are really helpful and certainly match the five star rating of the resort.
The town of Santa Maria is a short taxi ride away from the resort and is filled with interesting places to eat and it has a wonderful character of it's own that's a perfect blend of Caribbean, Portuguese and African. You'll occasionally be solicited to go into the gift shops, but a firm "Naõ!" does the trick, though it's great fun to barter with the shopkeepers if you are inclined to take gifts or souvenirs back home. Restaurants range from pricey (but excellent) establishments to small bars that serve up good food. Try the local catch, as it's just delicious, especially Wahoo, a large fish.
Is there anything I'd complain or warn you about? No. Would I go back to this apartment? You bet - I'm already looking at dates to book again.
