The Barlavento Islands region
Cape Verde is a beautiful group of islands off the West Coast of Africa. It has become known as the European Caribbean with it's beautiful white, sandy beaches and crystal clear blue seas. It has all the year-round sunshine.
Sal island is the most developed in terms of tourism but is still a completely unspoilt island with treasures to discover.
Enjoy sun, sand and sea but make sure you venture out of the resort into the local town of Santa Maria and explore local bars, restaurants, local music and night-life.
Above all go down to the local pier and watch the fishermen bringing in their catch including Marlin and Tuna. You can buy fish from the ladies on the pier as it comes off the boats and they will clean and prepare it for you to cook.
Ponta Preta beach is just outside Santa Maria (a 3 Euro taxi run).
Tortuga is built right on the beach with the restaurant/bar "O Grille" literally on the beach.
Why not walk all the way along the beach into Santa Maria ( a bit of a hike but well worth it).
There is local kite-surfing, wind-surfing, surfing, sailing, fishing and scuba diving available (book at reception)
