The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Poitou-Charentes region has a magnificent 350 km of coastline and is one of the finest destinations for all year round holidays and weekend breaks in France, being the 2nd sunniest region. The local town of Pons is a medieval town and has stunning examples of medieval architecture. It also has a local market every Sat and some excellent restaurants to sample the cuisine of the area.
Visit an original Roman Arc de Triomphe in the beautiful town of Saintes or go to Richard the Lionheart's castle in Niort. One of the many places worth a visit is the cellars and distilleries of Cognac, where you can visit the distilleries and vineyards of Hennessy, Otard, Remy Martin, Courvoisier and the countless smaller producers. The Poitou-Charentes comprises the Departments [16] Charente, [17] Charente Maritime, [79] Deux Sevres and [86] Vienne.
